I just keep gaining weight!!! :-(

I swear I am drinking a ton of water and not eating all that poorly.  I've always had a sweet tooth, so I won't lie and say I don't eat sweets....because I do.  But no more than I always have.  I stopped drinking any soda due to unnecessary calories.  I'm still gaining like crazy.  I think I've gained almost 10 lbs in 2 weeks.  WTF?!  I'm almost worried because my feet / ankles look like swollen marshmellows and I'm heavier than I have EVER been in my life.  It's really kind of depressing.  I feel like something is wrong with me.  I don't even want to leave the house because I don't want people to see me like this and I hide when H has friends over.  This is pathetic.

ETA: I have gained a total of 75 lbs.

Everyone gains differently. I am sorry it has you down. Just keep in touch with your doctor if anything really feels wrong. The end of this stage is near and it will be worth it. All the best.

  • I'd freak out too but try to stay calm. The weight will come off. And it's all worth it in the end. Sounds like quite a bit of water weight to me anyhow...

  • I gained ten in three days. I am retaining water like crazy. I'm sure that's what it is. You're in the home stretch! Try and stay positive!!!
  • You are not alone!! I've also gained approximately 75 pounds with this pregnancy.  No matter what I do, no matter how much I tried, the weight just kept coming.  I've voiced my concern to my doctor and I don't have GD.  She really isn't worried at all.  She assured me everyone's pregnancy is different so I shouldn't be comparing myself to other women.  I'm also the heaviest I've been in my life as well.  My DH still tells me I'm beautiful and that's all that matters to me.  I am not worried about losing the weight, I know I can.  Just try to hang in there!

  • I hope a lot of it is water weight.  My BP is always really low, actually.  I have an appt tomorrow so I'll know if anything changed there.  Thank God I'm in the final stretch.....25 days until due date. Ugh.

Everyone gains differently and varying amounts. To control the last few weeks of weight gain perhaps cut out dairy and starches. I've been doing that this last trimester to counterbalance my polyhydramnios and I lost 2lbs my last weigh-in. I was shocked because those are the only things I cut out!  But if your doctor isn't concerned, and your proteins in your urine are normal, then I wouldn't worry about it too much. It will melt off when you are done especially if you breastfeed or pump. Take a deep breath and just keep eating healthy and drinking lots of water!  If you are swelling you might want to add a couple extra short walks in each day to help with circulation.
  • Oh, honey, you're pregnant. We are all more than likely at the heaviest we have ever been and we are suppose to be. Maybe it's more than you wanted to gain...I know I've gained more than I wanted to...but just know all this weight gain is for a heck of a good reason: a healthy baby! Be proud of yourself and do things that make you feel pretty. I do my hair and wear make up to help with my pregnancy self esteem. It helps a little, but just know we are almost there!!!

All of this.  I'd like to add I know someone who gained over 80 in her first pregnancy and it just fell off in the few couple months.  Don't let it get you down.  I like the pp's suggestion of dolling yourself up to beat the blahs.  I've gained more than I wanted to too and I definitely feel better after a primp and pamper.

  • Also want to add my old neighbor kept telling me how she gained like 100 lbs with her boys. Finally, I asked how much she actually gained. She said 99 lbs, with each! This is a woman who looks to wear the same sz as me, like a 6 or 8. She said it took about 6 mos to lose it all but lost MOST of it right away.
  • I've gained a lot myself, but I've always had extra baggage. It doesn't look like I've gained the weight but the number scares me. I had a night where I just had an absolute breakdown and it was awful. But now that I know I'm not the only one, I can take pride in my swollen self. BP hasn't changed since I've gotten pregnant, and my urine's actually gotten healthier since. The only thing I've really struggled with is my immune system seems to be gone. I'm sick with colds and sore throats all the time, and I've had bronch once during the pregnancy and the flu three times...My dr's very impressed with my health overall but he tells me to take it easy and not stress my immune system.

  • My doctor told me at this stage about 1-2 lbs every couple of weeks is what she 'normally' sees.  I gained 8 in three weeks.  She was not concerned at all and said that 'normal' isn't necessarily normal for everyone. I had only gained 9lbs to this point(though I started overweight so my gain should be less).  She said while it was surprising for me to  gain that much that fast it is most likely just water retention and will clear up after baby is born.
