Birth weight

How long did it take for your babies to regain their birth weight? I'm just wondering because my LO is still 11 oz down at a week old.

  • Mine regained her weight by four days but has since stalled gaining only an oz. or two. I think it also depends if you are EBF or formula. Maybe not. My Mw said they notmalky expect them to regain birth weight by 10 to 14 days. So i think you are ok. Anyways GL.

My LO was 2oz past birth weight at 6 days old. He also eats nonstop...

  • Our little girl just got back to her birth weight a couple days ago and we're at 3 weeks. We're having milk supply issues though so that has a lot to do with it, we've had to supplement in order to get her back up.

  • My LO was down 7 oz by day 3 and by day 9 was over by 3 oz! I think it all depends on milk production if you're bfing and transfer of milk too. If ffing I'm not surebut she is an eater so I wasn't surprised she had already surpassed BW by a week old.

My son didn't regain his birth weight until yesterday, and he turned 3 weeks old Monday.  He was still 5 ounces down from it last Friday.  He thankfully gained 7 ounces over the long weekend.

  • My DS lost ten percent of his birth weight and gained it all back, plus some, within a week. We EBF and my milk came in day 2
  • Everyone always says 14 days but our pedi said it can take 3 weeks sometimes and he is totally okay with that. Our little guy dropped a lb in the hospital and was back to only 5 oz under at one week and is almost a lb over at2 weeks. He's a chunk now. Lol

  • From my research it has a lot to do with the amount of fluids a mom gets at birth. The more fluids, the baby can be over hydrated, lose the water weight and appear to have lost a high percentage of weight when really the weight has been inflated Point being if you got intravenous fluid during birth, I would not stress it.

  • My LO was down by 7oz five days after birth and was back up at her birth weight on day 15. She was a tiny baby, though, born at only 6lbs, 2oz.

  • My doctor said to expect them to lose 10% of birthweight and that she likes to see them regain it by week 2.

My LO was down 4oz when she left the hospital and 6oz above her birth weight at her day 6 appointment.  Shes a little boob shark that eats all the time.  Also, to PP point, I had no IV so that could be why she seemed to gain it back faster.

Agreed! Also, whether you have a c-section is also a factor according to my ped.  Since c-section babies are not squeezed through the canal, they are more water-logged at birth and therefore have an inflated birthweight due to more fluid in their system.  My DD was 9 lbs 6 oz at birth and bottomed out at 8 lbs 4 oz (12% of weight).  The ped was OK with this since she was a c-section.  It is also harder for larger babies to get back to their birthweight since most BF babies gain 4-7 oz per week.  Since my DD lost 18 oz, she was still 2 oz below her birthweight at 3 weeks, but again ped was OK with it since she was gaining 7 oz per week after bottoming out.

I was given 3 bags of fluid during labor and my baby was 9.5 lbs so that makes a lot of sense. His pedi said he should regain his weight by 14 days and we have to do a weight check on monday.

  • Our LO left the hospital at her birth weight. At our 1 week visit she lost 3 oz's but she has been her birth weight ever since and she's 3 weeks old tomorrow.
  • My baby took the full 2 weeks to regain hers and she was down 9 percent from her birth weight of 7.5. We had her on a feeding schedule of every 3 hours and are continuing to do so even through the night we still wake her up and feed her.

  • Two weeks. DS was down a lb [6lb 8oz to 5lb. 8oz] and regained due to bf and supplementing with BM and formula. He was off formula by 3 weeks and has gained 11oz a week for the past 3 weeks. He's up to 8lb 9.4oz as of today.

Very true. My LO lost 12 or more. But I had like 15 bags of fluid during my 32 hr labor, and was a c section. The nurses don't take this into account. But the pedi did

My baby was down 10 oz at his first appointment on day 4, then my milk came in and he gained 12 oz in 4 days! Everyone was amazed. My pedi says they like to see birth weight back by two weeks, somhang in there, mama, and try not to worry.
