Poll: Post-Pregnancy Exercise

Now that I'm starting to heal from my gall bladder surgery and my 6-week check-up is on Monday, I thought I'd start bugging you all about how you handled post-pregnancy exercise, so here's a poll!

When did you start exercising postpartum?

What did/do you do? (video, gym, running, etc.)

Biggest obstacle you had to overcome?

Did YH participate too?

What's your best advice for exercising?

How long has it taken for you to get back to pre-pregnancy weight, or how close are you to being there?

Thanks ladies!

When did you start exercising postpartum?

I started taking very short walks around 4 weeks (it hurt to go too far), then started taking long walks at 6-7 weeks.

What did/do you do? (video, gym, running, etc.)

Right now I'm just walking daily but since I'm back at work for two weeks, it won't happen but I walk around my school a ton everyday.

Biggest obstacle you had to overcome?

Mine is motivation. I don't like going out alone or working out at a gym alone.

    Did YH participate too?

He walks with me and H in the evenings.

What's your best advice for exercising?

I don't have any advice, I'm not good at exercising myself.

How long has it taken for you to get back to pre-pregnancy weight, or how close are you to being there?

I am almost back at pre-pregnancy weight. I was within 10 pounds by 2 weeks PP (have no idea how that happened). I'm 5 pounds away now but of course my body isn't the same and I still have that shelf of skin from the c/s.

I shouldn't have even opened this post, it's just going to make me depressed.

When did you start exercising postpartum?

I tried to do daily walks starting at 6 weeks.  I started weekly Pilates at 8 weeks, but that got shelved for a while once I returned to work.

What did/do you do? (video, gym, running, etc.)

Currently, I do 10 flights of stairs 4 times a day.  I do Pilates once a week most weeks (if MH isn't working late) and we try to walk 3 miles once or twice a week.  I did videos for a little bit, but my supply started dropping.

Biggest obstacle you had to overcome?

Time.  I work full time, and I only see E for 2 hours in the evenings.  I'm not willing to miss any of that time at the gym.  Which sucks bc I used to go to the gym 6 days a week, and it's killing me to be so unhappy with my body and have such a hard time doing anything about it.

    Did YH participate too?

He walks with us in the evenings.

What's your best advice for exercising?

Just do it.  Even if you can only squeeze in a short walk, or you'll be late to class, just go.  Some is better than none.  And stay hydrated, especially if you are BFing.

How long has it taken for you to get back to pre-pregnancy weight, or how close are you to being there?

Cue tears Crying.  I'm still 5 lbs away from my pre-pregnancy weight, which is actually 10 lbs away from my pre-IF weight.  And it's been 10 months.  I promised myself I would go easy on myself for 9 months, since that's how long it took to put it on.  But these last 5 lbs just won't budge.

  • I am likely not in the the norm on this,

When did you start exercising postpartum?

I started taking very short walks around my neighborhood the day after I came home from the hospital. At 5 weeks I was able to walk on a treadmill at the gym. At 6 weeks I started working out full time.

What did/do you do? (video, gym, running, etc.)

Then.... I was working out with a trainer four days a week and we were doing cardio and weight training. Now, I am working out on my own and only running about 2-3 days a week. I unfortunately have taken about 3 months off and I'm just now getting back into things.

Biggest obstacle you had to overcome?

Motivation, that's why I got the trainer. Once the sessions with the trainer ended, that's when my 2-3 month break started.

    Did YH participate too?

He would walk around our neighborhood with me, but we didn't go to the gym together. Honestly, I'm glad he didn't because that is my time to be alone.

What's your best advice for exercising?

I don't have any advice, I have to pay for a trainer to get me motivated so I'm not really the inspirational type.

How long has it taken for you to get back to pre-pregnancy weight, or how close are you to being there?

I got back to my pre-pregnancy weight by my 6 week appointment. I lost an additional 30 lbs between 6 weeks and now. My biggest challenge now is maintaining.

I also have to mention that DS was MSPI and I made the decision to continue to breasfeed him. This meant that I had to give up ALL food with any traces of dairy or soy. I am almost positive that I would not have had the success I had if I had not done that. That is likey why I have gained a few pounds now that he is able to tolerate dairy and soy.

  • I'm just starting out, but I'll share! I got cleared last week.

When did you start exercising postpartum? Walking 4 weeks out, but not regularly. I'm going to attempt a workout video tomorrow morning, we'll see how it goes!

What did/do you do? (video, gym, running, etc.) Walked the neighborhood (a little less than a mile), starting up the 30 day shred video

Biggest obstacle you had to overcome? I know the video is going to be a challenge. It's 30 minutes or so, and there's no way LO will be occupied enough for 30 mins straight (she's in the habit recently of only napping in my arms or Moby, so i'll have to fit it in during her awake time in the a.m.), so it will be a bit broken up.

Did YH participate too? He has always had his own workout routine, but he is always supportive and involved with diet changes at home since I do the grocery shopping!

What's your best advice for exercising? Just do it.... in fact, I should take my own advice :P

How long has it taken for you to get back to pre-pregnancy weight, or how close are you to being there? I'm 5lbs from pre-preg weight, 10lbs from pre-IVF (which is my ultimate goal)

    Thank YOU jessica ;)

  • When did you start exercising postpartum?

I started walking in the neighborhood the day I was discharged from the hospital.  I had a c-section so I was walking painfully slow at the beginning.

What did/do you do? (video, gym, running, etc.)

I have been doing brisk walking for a few years, and continued to do so up until I delivered.  So I went back to walking.

Biggest obstacle you had to overcome?

M was born in November, so the winter months were difficult because of snow/ice on the ground.

Did YH participate too? No; he bikes to work daily so that's his exercise.

What's your best advice for exercising?  Getting out of the house is good for both me and M!

How long has it taken for you to get back to pre-pregnancy weight, or how close are you to being there?

I was back to pre-pg weight at 3 months.  however, it hasn't budged since (I'm now almost 7m pp).  I have 5 lbs to lose from IVF drugs.
