So I'm really just venting here. When we had our initial consult with the RE and discussed costs he definitely said the cost of an IUI cycle was 500 dollars. I now realize that he meant that was the cost if unmonitored IUI and does not include the cost of ultrasounds. I had been paying 180 dollars each time I had an ultrasound so stupid me just assumed that was the cost. I just got a bill from the doctor for almost 1000 dollars. WTF. And this is on top of the 600 700 I already paid. That is no where near the 500 dollars I was told initially. Ugh!!!

Re: Real costs of infertility
That's not cool. They really should go over that with you and what it includes AND provide you with a printed copy.
My RE presents "packages" for the different types of IUIs they offer. They include all lab work for me and DH, all visits, and all sonos. They even give me an estimates cost for the meds and I have to sign a paper that states all of what the cost includes before we proceed.
It was $1000 for a Clomid cycle (which I did not do), $1300 for the combo of Fermara/Follistim, and $1900 for my current cycle of straight Follistim. The meds cost from $700-1300 decpending on how many vials of Follistim I needed.
I'm sorry for the bill. It really sucks to have this extra stress on top of what we are already doing.
They should definitely be telling you everything up front.

PAIF/SAIF Welcome!
i hate that cost is such a factor in this, but sadly, it is. We are OOP too so we are constantly evaluating the cost. When they were telling us about injects + trigger + IUI they quoted us $3500 per cycle for the meds, IUI and monitoring. Luckily we were able to come to an agreement to start with something cheaper, but the cost really sucks.
Sorry you are frustratd. Good luck to you.

Baby girl arrived on Thanksgiving day weighing 7lbs 6oz and measuring 20 inches
I would be upset, our RE's office has financial counselors that sent us all of the packages for IUI they offer with prices and what they include. I know every office is different
This was ours and since our cycle was canceled it is carried over to the next cycle with no extra fees:
CLOMID WITH INTRAUTERINE INSEMINATION (IUI)
Follicle Monitoring (Labs & Ultrasounds) $1500
2 IUI?S with Sperm Washing
This is a discounted rate for patients who do not have any insurance benefits and who are taking Clomid. This covers your office visit, ultrasound, blood work and 2 inseminations.
1/7/2015 Twins born @ 34 weeks
We are totally OOP, My RE is sensitive to that and offers packages too. So 3 IUI cycles with monitoring U/S is $560. I have had to buy an extra u/s my first cycle which was $150 I think. like pp's have said they should really give you a printed copy of everything. My RE has a financial adviser that talks through everything before proceeding with anything. being OOP sucks!

I have been caught off guard every single time I do a cycle. I always feel like SOMETHING creeps up on me. My RE is two hours away so all my u/s and blood work are here at my local hospital. This last cycle I was just proactive myself and called my insurance and ask EXACTLY how much they cover and then called my REs financial advisor and asked her for estimates on meds, blood work, u/s and procedures. I was close when I estimated our last cycle to be about 2,000.00 and it was 1700.00. Do your research and advocate for yourself so the next cycle you start, the money isn't a stress factor for you. This stuff adds up QUICK! So sorry you had to deal with the initial and unexpected costs.
yep it sucks... we are oop... with meds and utlrasounds, blood work, sperm washing , iui etc... an IUI easily gets to 2500-3500 a pop... We were never given a list so I was floored the first time I got the bills... now I know to get the cost of everything upfront...
The only saving grace is we can add it all up and deduct from our taxes on OOP medical expenses.....
