any new mommies want to share their birth stories on their kids and any experience you have had? Wrong due date, overdue, early, dialation/effacement, labor, false labor stories? Comparing baby #1 to others you have had?...etc
First child. 4 weeks of bed rest starting at 31weeks due to pre-term contractions every 3 min 24/7. Steroid shots just before 32 weeks. Baby arrived at 35 weeks after a brutal labor.
Contractions were intense and every 1 min with no break for about 12 hours of the 35 hour ordeal. I had to have narcotics to relieve the pain enough to sit down to have an epidural. Epidurals did not work so had to have 4. Went to 10cm, pushed for 2 hours and ended up having a C-section after baby was determined stuck in birth canal due to her head being tilted and resting on her shoulder.
Had to have a general since the C-sections meds did not work either and I could still feel my belly. After waking from C-section in immense pain I was screaming for drugs for 25minutes getting really pissed off they were not listening...only to learn they were listening but it took 4 different types of narcotics to finally find one that was effective. (I have never had anything more than a Tylenol so no idea why I was so drug resistant).
My husband met our daughter in the hall shortly after she was born and followed her to the NICU. He stayed with her for about an hour then brought her to me to meet and breastfeed before they shipped her back to NICU. After about 6-7 hours in the NICU our daughter got to come join me in our room where she stayed for the remainder 5 days of our stay.
Aside from a touch of jaundice and having low blood sugar my daughter was healthy and had no difficulties. She was started on formula and needed to stay on it for 3 days to keep her blood sugar up. Due to blood loss during C-section and other factors I had to supplement for the first 3 weeks until I had enough milk but have since been breastfeeding fully.
Had a pretty rough pregnancy (morning sickness, migranes, etc) and my blood pressure was always all over the place so i ended up getting induced on my LOs due date. When I got to the hospital at 10pm that night, they said i was 3cm and contracting so they starting me on cervadil. About an hour later my LOs heart rate started to drop so they broke my water and thats when my contractions got really intense. By 4am I was begging for some pain meds, but they didn't help so I ended up getting the epidural. And hour later I felt the urge to push and so I started pushing at around 8 and i push for about an 1 and a half and he was born at 9:29 at 8lbs 2oz and 22 1/4inches.
This is my first child, first time being pregnant. Everything was textbook, perfect. I had blood pressure issues the last two weeks, the highest was 138/87, which is the highest I have ever had it. But other than that, fine.
I was almost a week overdue. I was due March 29, had him April 3rd. My husband was 6 hours away from me at work when I went into contractions at 4:10AM. I called him and he was on his way, doctors and nurses said first time mothers generally take a while so he should be able to make it.
Well, I went from 4cm to 9cm in less than an hour and at 8:50 started pushing, luckily my husband was breaking the speed limit and got in the door around that time and I had my son at 9:06AM.
He was born 7lbs 1oz, and the doctor could barely get his gloves on when he came out, he basically shot out of me. Which is why I got a 2nd degree tear on the side of my vag, lol.
Pretty textbook pregnancy-gained about 40 lbs (which 5-10 lbs was muscle, since 9 weeks post partum I got my body fat tested, and was down to 16% body fat at 9lbs over my pre pregnancy weight), no high blood pressure, no GD, continued to workout my entire pregnancy . LO measured right on schedule up until I went past. I went about 10 days past due-at my appointment at 41 weeks, LO was said to be 9lbs 10 oz, so the doctor tried to prepare me for the possibility of a csection. I was schedule to be induced on the night of Monday, March 11th. At that appointment (March 8th) I was 0% effaced, not thinned at all, 0cm dialated, and she was "sky high". According to my doctor, my cervix was similar to that of a non pregnant woman.
Sunday morning, March 10th, I woke up to some light cramping around 6 am. Since they were coming at regular intervals, I figured I had started labor. I spent the morning doing normal things around the house with my husband (we even went to an outdoor mall so I could walk around and speed things up). At around 130, I told my husband that my contractions were about 3-5 minutes apart, lasting about a minute. Since I was so not even close to being ready on Friday, we figured I was probably only 1-2 cm dilated BUT that contraction scheme had been stuck in our heads so we figured we might as well go get checked out.
Come to the hospital to find out I'm 90% effaced, 4.5 cm dilated-which was great! I was not looking forward to the induction method (foley bulb) and was excited to get started naturally. I progressed to 5 cm within the hour, so they gave me the epidural, figuring I'd go quick. By 5 pm my water was broken (I had ALOT of water in there) and I was at about 7 cm.
However, LO was still in -2 station. As the night wore on, my labor stalled (but not my contractions-I was on the lowest Pitocin doasage because anything more gave me really intense/close together contractions), but never truly stopped. My epidural wore off on my right side around midnight-great. That was fun. I couldn't sleep because of that pain, plus my doctor swore I'd have a 3 am baby
6 am rolls around, and I'm 8.5 cm dilated and she's stuck between -2 and -1. I try to push, but she barely descends. I tell them I have an intense pain on my right hip, even with the epidural, that comes with every contraction. The doctor shows up around 8, and gives me a check. My nurse calls the doctor, who says if I can't deliver by the time he gets there (10 am) I'll have to have a csection. By 9, they've checked me, I'm at 9 cm but with each push she's barely grazing 0 station. They turn the epidural and Pitocin off, and let me wait it out until he gets there. The doctor comes, checks one more time, despite one swollen cervical lip, I'm almost completely dilated, but baby still isn't coming down. The epidural is completely worn off, I'm exhausted in pain, and have been in labor for about 26 hours at this point.
So they give me the epidural block, and the anstheologist remarks that my original epidural was not placed correctly, resulting in the pain I felt in my right. ok...
once we're in the OR, he does the check (can you feel this? can you feel this?). I can feel some of it, but they start anyways. THE EPIDURAL BLOCK DOES NOT WORK CORRECTLY. I can feel way more than I should, and it's awful. it's incredibly painful, and I'm so shot from the labor, the pain, and the gallons of drugs pumped into me. I'm shaking like crazy, but there's my little girl and I'm crying, asking where she is and why can't I hold her. They let me kiss her, and wheel us down to my room-I'm so drugged out though I can't remember anything past leaving the OR.
I was terrified when we went to the operation room. I was in so much pain, I had to push so bad but couldn't, I was shaking and I was exhausted. But I'd do it again for my LO...
Little Riley-our first little girl coming March 1st, 2013 (or sometime around there;)
Uneventful pregnancy. 3 days before my due date had my 39 weeks appt and had my membranes stripped. Was barely 1cm dialated at the time but 90% effaced. Had very irregular contractions on my due date (1 an hour, then 5 an hour, then none etc...) Went to bed thinking nothing of it since they were so irregular. Awoke at 1:45am with intense contractions, 3-5min apart. Being a FTM I got up and walked around for an hour before finally calling L&D. On the phone they didnt seem convinced that I needed to come in but told me to come anyway "if I wanted to". Woke my husband at 3, got to hospital at 3:30. First check I was already 7cm with a bulging bag of waters. Baby was initially posterior so I had really bad back labor. Finally got epidural at 5 am (the nurse checked me before they sat me up just to make sure he wasnt already crowning and I was a 10.
After I got the epidural, my water broke, and I could no longer feel the contractions so the nurse let me just relax before beginning to push. Pushed about 30 minutes, baby born at 0641. He had his hand next to his mouth and the cord around his neck which caused a 2nd degree tear and the need for vacuum extraction, but he pretty much cried before his feet were out. Strong, vigorous cry! Perfectly healthy at 7lbs 10oz and 19.5 inchs long.
It wasn't what I expected but I wouldn't change anything about it!
My pregnancy was OK. Morning sickness sucked, although I never actually threw up. Then in a few ultrasounds they thought they saw echogenic bowel, so I had to get several level II ultrasounds, and it always turned out to be nothing. At one point, my little guy's kidneys were a bit too dilated. . . also turned out to not be a problem.
I thought I would be late, but surprise! I was 6 days early. I had been having strong braxton hicks for a while, and on March 17 they were very strong and very regular/frequent. As soon as I got in to bed that night, I started having real painful contractions. They were about 8 minutes apart ALL NIGHT LONG. I should have gotten up and walked around to speed things up, but dummy that I am, I stayed in bed hoping to get some sleep. Nope, got none. When I finally did get up in the morning, my contractions went quickly to 5 minutes apart, so we got ready to head to the hospital. When I got there, I was 3cm dilated and 90% effaced. Little guy's head was very, very low. After a few hours of trying to walk around (so painful to do anything during contractions), they checked me again and I was still 3cm, at which point they told me I could go labor at home for a while if I wanted. I cried and said HELLS NO. Good thing, because when they checked me about an hour or so later I was 8cm dilated, which made sense because I was in such pain, shaking, completely exhausted and asking for an epidural. By the time they were ready with the epidural, I was 9.5 cm dilated (almost time to push) and feeling the severe urge to bear down with each contraction. The midwife and I decided that I would still get the epidural because I was exhausted (it was about 4pm and I hadn't slept the night before) and could use a break before pushing. With the epidural, I had a nice long break, though I still couldn't sleep. I kind of wish I hadn't gotten it because it definitely slowed things down and then it was difficult to push even after letting the epidural wear off. I was having all the pain, but not feeling the super strong urge to push. But, with the help of a small episiotomy, my baby boy was born at 10:07pm on March 18th. They immediately put him skin to skin on my chest and that was the most amazing moment ever. Words can not even describe it. After that sucked again as my midwife dug her fingers into my abdomen so hard to try to dislodge the placenta. oh the pain!
All in all, the morning sickness, discomfort, and labor are totally worth it. I can't wait to do it all again!
