VBAC

VBAC Calculator

Has anyone seen the VBAC calculator they have on line. If so can anyone tell me why you odd's go down almost ten percent if your Hispanic or African-american. Why does that matter when it comes to birth.

I think that calculator is kind of bogus. It was based on data from one hospital, at which they have a large percentage of low-income African-American and Hispanic patients, and those groups statistically receive less prenatal care than other groups, and statistically have other health problems that affect overall health. Low-income women (that did not receive adequate prenatal care) are much more likely to have pre-term births (I don't know why), and those usually result in a section. The calculator also doesn't take into account a lot of other factors that affect a normal birth, and I think it's silly to scare women with that.

  • This is all just based on observational data and suggests correlation, not causation. So it's not that being Hispanic or Black makes some one more likely to need a c-section, but various risk factors have a higher correlation with those racial backgrounds - like weight, exercise, diabetes, taking a birth class and knowing your options. If nothing else, low quality medical care would result in higher c-section rates, right? And it is documented that minorities receive, on average, lower quality medical care, regardless of income. So that's a terrible reality of care in our country, but if you are a healthy Hispanic or African-American VBAC candidate with a supportive provider, and hopefully supportive people in your life (significant other + doula/mom), then your chances should be as good as anyone else's.

  • I think the calculator is rubbish and any hopeful VBAC mom should stay away. Too many factors it can't take into consideration that lead to successful VBACs.
  • I don't recall what site I was looking at (maybe it was Spinning Babies?) but different ethnic groups had different odds of having different pelvic bone shapes. I also wouldn't know how to make this lack of information relevant to OP's question.
"What are you having?" "Well the radiologist says its a healthy little human baby. I'm a little disappointed, because I really wanted a puppy." LOL
