When to move baby from crib to toddler bed

So my LO has been waking up in the middle of the night and the only reason i can think of is because he's moving around too much and hits the sides of his crib which is waking him up. I only think this because when he's in the bed with me, he moves all around. Is 19 months to early to move him to a bed with one of them safety rails? ( I'm not sure that's what they are even called.)

We skipped the toddler bed altogether because LO moved around so much. He's in a full bed right now, we just barricade him in. He's been there for around 4 months now. He really likes all the room, and has a hard time sleeping anywhere else. I guess he likes his bed. So that was around 14-15 months I guess.

I believe in keeping kids contained as long as possible. My rule is not to move until they can climb out or you need the crib for another baby. With DS, we moved him around 28 months because he started climbing out.

If he's moving around that much, he will just hit the rail on the new bed too.

Our LO does love the bed, usually gets up at 5 in the morning and then I put him in with me and goes back to sleep. I was in a bed at 15 months b/c my brother was born. I don't think it is too early. I would run in by the pedi but I don't see the big deal.

Ditto. My son is 20 months and he is staying in his crib until he climbs out. I know there is no way he'd stay in his bed if he were able to get out.

We have LO in a crib that converts to a toddler bed. We plan to convert it once he starts trying to climb out of his crib. We'll probably have a safety rail there for awhile in the beginning.

I agree with this. DD moved to a toddler bed right when she turned two and was immediately getting out of bed and horsing around the house early in the morning. I'm not making that mistake again

I didn't know that there was contention for this...but in my expereince LO has stayed in his bed until we get him up, he just says "Mama" or "Daddy" and we go in and he's sitting up. He sleeps through the night, and that wasn't happening in his crib. My hand has been slapped...but it works for us.

I didn't mean to slap your hand at all, but it was not the best choice for us. I would rather keep DS contained for as long as possible is all.

Only you can know if it is too early for a toddler bed. DD is almost 19 months and we're no where near her being ready for that much freedom. She hasn't tried to escape, but once she does, then we'll cross that bridge. I hope she makes it until at least 2 y.o. *fingers crossed*

DD is almost 17mo and we will probably be switching soon. She can not climb out yet, but she keeps trying and getting her leg stuck between the crib slats. If she wasn't getting stuck we wouldn't be thinking about switching yet.

We get such a better night's sleep. He is also in the same room as us and when he wakes up, he walks right on over and climbs into bed with us (we have a king size mattress on the floor). I don't even wake the first time he gets up, and he knows he can come to me if he needs me.

We had switched DS by that age already. I just took out all the toys, I did leave books and stuffed animals. I didn't mind if he played with them before falling asleep.
