T's and P's

Well, I had my first appt over a month ago. Last night, my doctor called me to tell me my pap came back with mild to significant amounts of abnormal cells and that I need to go see a gynecologist oncologist. The reason it took so long to hear from her is because she resubmitted the sample. When she saw the report she didn't believe it because I have never had an abnormal pap and my last one was in June of 2012, not even a year ago. I didn't get much sleep last night and pretty much cried off and on. I will be having a colposcopy. Anyone ever have one or any experience with any of this? This is our first baby and she said the baby will be fine. I'm very scared and sad. Any advice is much appreciated. Sorry this is so long

Re: T's and P's

  • T's and P's for you. I have had many abnormal paps. They say every woman will have at least one in their lifetime. Try not to panic. The colposcopy is just a more intensive pap. It takes a few minutes longer and it is mildly uncomfortable. Otherwise, its not a huge deal. They just take more significant samples. Just try to stay calm if you can.

  • Thoughts and prayers coming your way.  Sorry you are in such a stressful situation.  I'm sure everything will work out just fine but I know it's stressful right now.  I have had an abnormal pap but not a colposcopy so I'm not much help in regards to that.  Good luck and keep us posted!

Try not to get worked up. It's really no big deal, although I understand that it is a very big deal to you right now. I was the same way when I got my abnormal pap. I had that procedure done... Like ppers said its just like a pap. Turns out I have hpv, which can go away or can turn into something.... They just have to watch it every year. Nowadays many people have it... Like they say on Girls, "all adventurous women do" [and even some non adventurous women like me... I got it frm my dh].

It will be ok, won't effect the baby, and won't effect your ability to have children in the future. Don't worry!
  • I had the hpv vaccine in my early 20's so it's not that. My dr said they can't do a biopsy since I am pregnant. She is setting up the appt for me and is calling me back today. She said if I have any questions to ask away. My mom read that they can freeze off the abnormal cells? I am unsure if they can do this while I'm pregnant.

Gardasil (if that's the one you had) only covers 4 strains that are responsible for 70% of abnormal cell/cancer cases, so it still could be HPV.

I had an abnormal pap when I was 17, and ended up getting a LEEP procedure before it was all said and done. It was scary, but here I am more than a decade later and I haven't had an abnormal test since that year.

I have a strain on HPV that increases your chances for cervical cancer. I've had a colpscopy and a LEEP procedure. The colposcopy was definitely less intense from what I remember.  Like PPs have said, it's more like an extended pap. I would try not to worry, I think abnormal paps are pretty common.

I also had the vaccine and still contracted hpv from my DH. I had a colposcopy, and had paps every six months after. Since I had DS via CS oddly enough I have had totally normal results each time. My friend did have the procedure where they freeze the abnormal cells and that worked for her. I'm sure you will learn more soon about what can be done while prego, so try not to worry about what may be. I know it's difficult. You are in my prayers!

  • Thank you all for your kind words and advice. You all have calmed my nerves a little. I wouldn't be such a mess if I didn't have all of these extra hormones!

  • First of all, deep breath.

I've had abnormal paps for the last 2 years, and a colposcopy done every 3 months since April of 2011. The cells they keep finding are moderate dysplasia so they have just been monitoring me closely. My doctor hopes the cells will rid themselves once baby is born.

The colposcopy isn't a big deal.. Take Tylenol before you go and RELAX. Everything will be just fine.

I had the same thing a few years ago after my son was born. I had 2 abnormal pap smears. I got the colposcopy and everything was perfectly normal. My next Pap was normal again and has been since.

This.  I have had a few abnormal paps that did turn out to be pre-cancerous lesions that had to be removed.  Don't freak.  Easier said than done; I know.  I freaked out and cried the times I got this news, too.  The point of paps is early detection.  Women who get their paps on a regular basis almost always catch anything 'bad' before it gets to be untreatable.  Also, since your last pap pre-pregnancy was normal, there is a good chance that being pregnant alone could have caused the abnormal results.  Pregnancy changes your cervix and everything could go back to normal after you deliver.  T & P for you.  Keep us updated.
