4 month old regression

I posted this in the 3-6 month board, but I thought I would check here as well :)

I've seen several times on this board that the 4 month old time period is a very diffcult time period. My 17 week old is going through this and has now started waking back up in the middle of the night which he hasn't done since 10 weeks old. Why is this time period so difficult, what are they going through? I thought maybe teething, but I don't see or feel anything. I'm not sure what to look for though. Those that have been through this, how long does it last? And if it's teething, what more should I look for? (poop changes, white spots, etc) Also, do you have any remedies for teething pain?

Re: 4 month old regression

  • We have been going through it for a few weeks now. 4 months is a big developmental month where they start to roll over, have full head control can be awake longer etc. Anything that involves development jacks with their sleep. As far as teething if you look at their gums and don't see in any white (as int he teeth are trying to break through) I doubt it is teething. We thought the same thing but it was just the 4 month crap shoot of sleeping. It does it getting, we are getting closer to 5 months and she is getting there. She still wakes up twice a night to feed and goes right back to sleep. I don't plan on weaning her until around 6 months or so, babies can still take night feedings up to 9 months and that's pretty normal.

If it is teething you can look on Amazon and they have a whole bunch of items for teething babies to nibble on, will help during the day but not really at night.

  • It's just a developmental stage, to put it simply.  They're changing and growing and learning new skills and with that comes fussiness and sleep disturbances. It could be teething, but I think most are kind of young for it.  But if it's teething, most babies have the most pain when the tooth is visably coming through.  If you don't see that, it's probably not happening yet.  You could try putting a teether in the fridge and letting him chew on it.

The Wonder weeks explains this as a "leap" and its suppose to end around 19.5 weeks.

  • pretty much what the PP have said. its developmental overstimulation. we have been waking up 5-10 times per night where we have been sleeping through the night since he was 2 months old.

the regression really has nothing to do with teething, but with teething look out for white spots under gums, hand biting, low grade fevers, runny poop.
