5am wake up call

For those of you who's Lo's love waking up in the 5 oclock hour, I feel you!  I know this is something I'm going to have to deal with, but I am curious, how do you all go about it.  I seem to play it by ear.  If she has slept from 7pm on, I feed her and try to put her back down (she usually will but sometimes only for a half hour).  I've also tried moving bedtime from 7 to 730 but this seems to make no difference whatsoever.  Sometimes she'll wake at some other point in the night, be it 12 or 3 and I'll feed her then.  If its on the later side, say 3, my husband will go in at 5 and just rock her back to sleep and she'll sometimes last until 630.  She's so inconsistent with how she goes about it, yet 515, shes always up.  I also have a hard time thinking this is just her wake up time, bc the times I just call it a day and get her up and bring her out, shes super cranky like, wait I wasnt ready to get up.  And shes a teeeerrible napper (30 mins. tops at a time) so it's not like shes getting any sleep back during the day. Just curious as to how everyone goes about their 5 am wake up call.

  • Generally a baby's bedtime should be 12h before you want them to get up. Put if your LO is bright eyed and bushy tailed after 10h, that could be your baby's normal. DD will only sleep 10h at night so her bedtime is 9pm. She does nap 5-6h total in the day though to make up for it.

  • My 8 month old is sleeping through the night, but was also waking up at 5am.  We're still in the process of battling it, but the past week he's been getting up close to 6, if not a little later.  We were putting him to bed at 6pm pretty regularly bc when we did any later, he would start to wake in the middle of the night.  Instead of such a dramatic jump in bed time, we gradually put him to bed 15 min later every 4 nights.  So for nights 1-4 we'd do 6:15 bedtime, nights 5-8 we'd do 6:30, and so on.  In your case, your baby may actually need to go to bed earlier than 7pm.  While a lot of parents say their baby sleeps 7p-7a, that's not the case with all babies.  Every baby is different.  Hope this helps!
  • My LO does the exact same thing! We put him to bed at 7 pm, and he wakes up at 12, 3, and 5. He usually isn't hungry at 5 doesn't want to feed, and will fall asleep if we rock him. Sometimes he will sleep in the crib and sometimes he refuses to sleep anywhere but in our arms. We can usually get him to sleep until 7 if we hold him. I'm hoping this is just a phase!
