Two Under 2

Advice

Our daughter will be 15 months old by the time our second child, a boy, is due. Other than different clothing to buy, what else should we buy? Second crib? Secod diaper pail? Double stroller? A little background on me and my husband is that we enjoy a suburban livestyle and we drive to everything but the park and playground. Please if you have any advice about what to purchase before baby boy comes, let us know!

My 2 are 13.5 months apart, but were supposed to be 15 months apart. I had a girl 1st, then a boy 2nd. We bought a 2nd crib, a 2nd changing table and clothes for baby boy. We essentially did 2 nurseries, with 2 rocking chairs, 2 cribs, everything. I don't regret that for a second. We also bought a double stroller. We did not buy a 2nd diaper pail as we have always had only 1 next to our garbage in the kitchen.

The only thing I wish we didn't buy was a 2nd changing table. We barely used it, maybe just for the 1st 2 months and that was all.

  • Thank you for your advice! We are moving in June up North and I was thinking we would need a whole other room just for him but i wasnt sure what exactly to purchase. So do you think buying a second diaper genie is a bad idea?
  • I'm not sure if a regular trash can will hold in the poopy diaper smell..
  • It really just depends on where and how you use the Diaper Pail. Some people with just one baby have 2 or 3 in their house depending on where they commonly change diapers and how far they want to go before disposing of it. If you will have 2 nurseries and want a pail in each, or nursery upstairs and living room downstairs, then go for it! They aren't an expensive item, and you can probably sell it on Craigslist quick if you don't end up using it.

As for other things you may think about getting. I am getting a double stroller,  A second PNP, Highchair, and crib (we are doing the convertible so they will stay with the child), these are because DD still needs her's while DS will need his own. Also, a bather a play mat and infant carseat for DS since DD's are pink. Then just bedding and clothes. Not a whole lot, but it's enough that I made a registry in case people want to know what I need.

  • Thats a good point about the diaper genie. We only change our daughter in her nursery when we are at home and have only needed one but i wonder if other brands hold more diapers or is overall better so i could purchase that one instead. I guess i will just have to make a list of things we need for our baby boy sooner rather than later! Im not worried about selling any baby stuff since we plan on a big family but there are a few things if i could go back, i wouldn't buy again like a changing table.. It was useful for a few months but once she started rolling over its been a waste.. We change her on her pad on the ground now lol
  • I never even got a changing table! We change DD on the floor, on the bed, on the couch, wherever!! I learned that from my bff, and while I know that some people think they are a necessity, I look at them as simply a storage item.

  • Ya i totally wish we didnt buy a changing table it wasnt worth it! I wont make that mistake this second time around..its purely for "looks" in her nursery.
  • Mine are 15.5 mos apart. We moved DD1 to a mattress on the floor at 15 mos and she did great. We figured DD2 would be in our room for a while, so if she wasn't able to adjust, she could go back to the crib for a bit. We definitely needed the double stroller - there was no way I could have gone out without it. I like my carriers, but since LO1 was still so small, she also needed to be picked up/put in car seat/pulled out of car seat/ carried into the store, so for me (short and short-waisted) it was cumbersome to try and manage that with a baby strapped to my front. We did not get duplicates of anything else - we had one diaper pail, by the time the little one was ready for a high chair, we had moved the bigger one to a booster seat at the table, we mostly change diapers on the floor. I tried to take a very minimal approach - the stores are always there if you decide you need something.
