3rd Trimester

back pain and menstrual cramps

I'm 39 weeks as of tomorrow, 1 cm dilated, and as of Friday I lost my plug. Tonight I've been experiencing really uncomfortable lower back pain and menstrual cramping. Last time I called the dr with a question I was made to feel like the most stupid person on the planet so it makes me hesitate to call anyone. Granted the dr I spoke with wasn't my own it was one that was on call and she is not very nice, but I literally went home and cried after I spoke with her. I have my 39 week appt tomorrow but just wondering what this might be.

  • It could be contractions. you could check in. youre far enough along.

  • Just wanted to chime in and commiserate.  I'm in almost the EXACT same boat....39 weeks tomorrow. I haven't been dilated at all but had some interesting fluid loss this morning....called the doc, was made to feel like a moron. I'm also going in tomorrow for my weekly check....I feel completely blindsided by this portion of the pregnancy. Either I wasn't listening or no one told me how crappy the waiting and anticipating is.  Hang in there, sister, and good luck....we're all in it together.
  • That sucks the doc was so mean to you... Sounds like you are experiencing what I have been this past couple of weeks. I'm 39w2d. Horrible menstrual cramping and lower back pains. I'm 80 effaced and 1 cm. hoping for some progress tomorrow at my appt. midwife tells me all these pains are normal and signs of pre labor. Hang in there!!!

  • That was early labour for me. It was pretty obvious when I was in "real" labour as opposed to early labour, though. Wait and see.
  • My due date is Thursday and I've been experiencing these symptoms for three days now on and off. However I've been told things can change very fast..doesn't hurt to call the doctor if you are able to time the cramping. Remember your paying the doctor:)
  • What an ***. I have read and talked to women who truly didn't know they were in labor because they didn't have the traditional painful contractions so I too get worried by all these menstrual cramps. I would wait it out and see if u can time them some women have these pains for several weeks before going into labor

Yup, there was no doubt here for two labors once "real" labor started.

  • I'm sorry you cried! How freaking rude!
  • Back pain and menstrual cramps was my exact description for contractions.

  • Thank you! I just got done with my Dr. appt and once again it wasn't my regular Dr and I was practically pushed out the door. She didn't listen to my questions, just talked over me. I'm just in shock as to how I have been treated in the last week.

As far as baby goes I'm assuming there is no progress because she was talking as she was walking out the door and closing it behind her.

  • your body is prepping for labor...sometimes it takes weeks, days, or even hours! I am somewhere bw31w-37w & have been experiencing the same thing....tons of pressure, 1cm dialated, shortness of breath, menstrual cramping, etc.

with my two boys (now 9yrs and 7yrs), I was dialted 1 1/2-2mo prior to giving birth to them overdue at 41w and the other at 40w5d!

    hang in there!!!!
