Sick baby...worried mom

Where do I begin? Last Thursday my mom mentioned my little guy had diarrhea 3 times. I didn't think too much of it. Well early Friday morning he woke up with a fever of almost 102 and a killer diaper rash. Gave him tylenol and back to bed. Well the fever raged on as did the diarrhea, like 15 times that day. Once his temp hit 104 we ran to the ER. All tests cam back normal and the gave him fluids via an IV and I wont go into detail about the nurse trying 4 times to find his vein and them him being stuck a 5th time by a nurse who got it on the first try!

We were told it was a virus that needed to pass. By Sunday lo was still coughing having diarrhea (although its returning to normal more and more) but fever was gone and diaper rash was way better. Then all of the sudden we started seeing some blood in his stool. Took him to doc this morning and they took another stool sample for more tests. Now when I get home from work my little guy is running a fever over 102 again and diaper rash is raging again. SERIOUSLY. Anyone by any chance experience anything like this? Of course I'm freaking out and even more worried about Steven Johnson syndrome from this kid having tylenol for so many days. I'm sorry for venting but I'm a FTM who's trying to the flip the eff out!

I wish I had good advice for you....I was always told blood in stool was concerning, but it sounds like they've already ran tests. I hope your doctors can get you some answers soon...it's terrible when they are sick. ((hugs))

  • I'm so sorry your going through this. We had a similar experience with my LO running a super high fever. We initially brought him to a clinic when we saw his temperature was so high they told us it was just a virus and to give tylenol. The next morning his temp spiked to 102.9, I brought him back to the clinic and they sent us to the ER for testing. 5 hours later, chest x-rays, blood tests, urine tests they found he had a severe UTI, which is super uncommon for boys. It was so scary we had to spend the night in the hospital and he needed antibiotics IM and by mouth. I really feel for you going through this. Our pedi recommended alternating between Advil and Tylenol as one affects the kidneys and the other the liver, maybe you could ask about that if your concerned with giving Tylenol so much. I hope your LO feels better soon and they can find out what's making him sick and get him on the road to recovery.

  • Around four months my son picked up a seriously nasty stomach virus at daycare. He ran a high fever for almost a week, had terrible diarrhea, and projectile vomiting. We ended up in the ER and they ran a battery of tests that came back negative. It took about a week for him to return to normal and we had to let things run it's course. It was completely scary and I feel for you. We ended up using culturelle for kids in his bottles, as per our Ped's orders, and the diarrhea finally went away. Fingers crossed you get some answers and relief soon!
  • I had SJS when I was about 2. I looked bruised and my cartilage started swelling, I think it affects the skin more. I know you said he has a diaper rash but I would assume that's from the diarrhea if it doesn't spread.

I sure hope it's not SJS and honestly I would probably be the mom returning to the ER and risking looking "crazy overprotective" than worrying about it at home.

  • Just wanted to say hope this passes quickly, and your little one starts feeling better!! I can't believe the nurse kept trying to get Iv access after so many failed attempts! Per most facility policy in my area, for adults at least, there is a two stick maximum, then another nurse has to try! That many times to stick especially an infant is unacceptable!
