Induced at 34 weeks

Hi, this is my first pregnancy so am very anxious about this. My waters broke at 25 weeks and I've managed to get to 334 today and being induced at 34. I would like to hear anyone else's experience of being induced early and how u felt before hand. I'm really proud of getting so far since it all happened at 25 weeks but really apprehensive of what's next. Thank u xxxx

  • Is that possible to have your water break and not deliver until around two months after? I have never heard of this
  • Correct me if I'm wrong but, I thought that once your water breaks, that's kind of it for the pregnancy, isn't it? No turning back because of risk for infection? I mean, at the very least wouldn't you have to remain hospitalized so medicsl professionals could assist with infection prevention? I didn't realize that you could continue a pregnancy after your water breaks...

I have heard of this before. It was more of a small tear and not a full out rupture and it resealed or something. I would have to do research but as I said, not the first time I have heard of this. Obviously more info from the OP would be helpful to determine what happened though.

I've heard of this. It's safer for the baby to be in there and monitored for infection than it is to deliver early in some cases.

It's a different situation if you are too early for baby to be delivered safely, it's called Preterm Premature Rupture of Membranes, or PPROM, and from my understanding you're typically monitored VERY closely for signs of infection or baby distress from low fluid while they try to give baby time to mature. The risks of having ruptured membranes is lower than the risks of a baby born at 25 weeks, or whatever the case may be. Making it to 34 weeks is great.
    Waiting for #3!

  • My membranes ruptured, I didn't get a full gush of waters, they say it could of been a small tare and it is possible to heal up, I was put on antibiotics and had steroids. I have been scanned and water levels checked twice weekly at the hospital also checking for any signs of infection. This has been the best support for the last 7 weeks as they say its safer for the baby to grow inside of me whilst monitoring my infection levels. Now I've come to the end of this massive stress I'm trying to prepare myself for the Induction process. X thank u for your replies xxx
  • Thank you, I am very proud my baby has stayed safe inside of me, it's been such a long journey getting here with some weeks at the hospital every day. I am ready to meet him or her and want to be as calm as possible for the labour, which is what I was hoping to get any advice / other people's journeys from. X

This is possible and a blessing that she was able to make it this far.  OP congrats and good luck!  As far as labor inductions, you usually start off with mild contractions. They gradually become stronger, that's the time to manage your pain by whatever means you plan to.

Like the pp said, it's called PPROM (preterm premature rupture of membranes) PROM (premature rupture of membranes). The 1st is when a mom is preterm and her water breaks but labor hasn't onset.  The 2nd is when she's term and her water breaks & labor hasn't onset. When someone breaks their water at 25 weeks, current recommendation is for them to try to stay pregnant until 34-36 weeks. Most docs will induce at 34 or 35 weeks. This person is hospitalized from rupture day until delivery, they get monitored for signs of infection, fetal well being and fluid levels.  They will receive steroids to assist with the baby's lung maturity and about 7 days of antibiotics.  The problem is most of them will go into labor or get infected (chorioamnionitis). If this happens, they have to deliver because stopping labor is now contraindicated.  We had a patient who ruptured at 24 weeks and stayed with us until 35 weeks!  We knew her so well that we (nurses & docs) gave her a baby shower before her induction day. So once again, congrats to the OP and her LO for making this far!

  • Thank you. It has been a journey and I suppose with everyone's pregnancy the labour will be different for everyone. I am hoping for a stress free labour with a positive result x

That's what I figured. How amazing you have made it this far already!

As far as the induction goes I'm sure everything will go smoothly. Obviously I'm not sure how your PROM would play into this at all.

  • Congrats on making it so long after your water broke! That's really impressive!

I know it's scary, and I know it's not ideal, but delivering now is so much better than in the weeks before, and also better than waiting and risking the LO going into stress. The dr's will be taking great care of you and baby. best of luck! Keep us updated!
