Working Moms

When do you find the time to workout?

I had a physical recently and was horrified at my weight gain. ?I knew it was bad, but I didn't realize how much. ?I must be the only woman alive who lost weight during her pregnancy (I didn't have much of an appetite for much of the time) and then gained it all back and some afterwards. ?I definitely stress/boredom eat, but that is another topic for another day....anyway, I work outside the home 4 days a week, and I want to know how other moms find time to workout? ?It seems like our entire days are packed of work, commuting (45 min ea way) getting baby to/from daycare, and then taking care of baby at night...and weekends are full of errands and trying to get some rest. ?I know I need to do something though...I have zero energy and I hate how I look.

What have you found that works for you?

?

  • Nothing.  I feel your pain and share your problem.  I too work and the evenings are filled with taking care of my DD.  After that, I'm so exhausted and need to gear up for the next day.  I think it's really hard.  I'm planning on joining WW after the holidays.

  • I plan on getting a wii fit, so that my DH and I can do this after DD goes to bed instead of watching tv.
  • I went to this board to post the same exact question. I'm in the same boat, I work outside the home all day, and by the time I get home, I want to spend time with DD before she goes to bed (which after commuting home, isn't long). By the time she's in bed, I try to find time to pick up the house, cook dinner, and then hit the hay for the next day. I really don't know how people find time to workout.  The only time I have off, I want to spend with DD because I know how quickly this age passes.

So, I'm at an impasse. I too have thought about Wii Fit and/or Weight Watchers. It'll be easier in the spring/summer when I can take DD out for evening walks, but it's literally freezing here (snow expected), so right now, we're cooped up indoors. I look forward to the responses to this post.

  • Well, I'm glad to read I'm not alone. ?I'm in Minnesota, so any outside exercise is definitely out of the question until May! ?We've thought about getting a treadmill, but I really just don't know when we'd have time to use it without sacrificing sleep! ?(which I'm not thrilled about doing)
  • I go to the gym at lunch

  • I only take a 1/2 lunch so I can leave work early.  Luckily, I have a gym in my office building, plus I don't have a long commute.  I try to go to the gym after work Mon-Thur.  I usually make it at least 3 of the 4 days.  I need that time to myself.  I enjoy it and it is a good stress releaver for me.  You just have to figure out something that works in your schedule.

  • I usually work out on weekend mornings and try to get up early one morning a week.  That's the best I can do.  In the summer, I would walk on my lunch hour and take the kids for walks after work.
  • I have a WiiFit and do it on alternating nights.  DH and I take turns putting ds to bed so on the nights when DH puts ds to bed, I do WiiFit.  I also take a ballet class on Saturday afternoons and DH gets his alone time with DS (I have mine after work as my commute is much shorter than dh's).
  • It is hard....I use to workout daily before having my son.  I SAH for 15 mo's after he was born and still exercised daily.  I have taught aerobics for years and have always been fit......Now that I am back at work in a demanding job, I still teach aerobics twice a week (Monday night and Saturday morning).  My DH and I go to the gym together on Sunday mornings (DS goes to the daycare there....he loves it because our friend's kids are also there on Sunday morning and he plays with them).  That is my workout for the week......I still want to exercise more, but I can't justify spending more time away from DS.  I think DH and I are going to get some yoga DVDs and try to do that once a week at home after DS goes to bed.  I asked for some DVDs for xmas.....I hope to start in January once the holiday stress is gone!

  • it;s so hard especially with the weather getting colder. i usually don't get home till 7pm from work so by the time i bathe & feed DD & then put her to bed, it's 8:30-9pm.. usually super tired but i try and do a tape (taebo or something like that) like 2x during the week and then i hit the gym on saturday & sunday for about 2 hours each. DH watches her then.
  • I'm in Minnesota too! I so wish I could take her outside but it is too cold. I don't know where you live but I go to the YWCA. They have an indoor track so I can walk with the stroller. I do between 2-4 miles. I also do the video made by Parenting magazine where you use your baby as weights. It has fun little exercises for the baby. It isn't cardio but I think my arms do look better from doing baby bicep curls :)
  • I get up early (5:30am) to go to the gym. DH can watch DS during this time. There is a 6:00am spinning class at my gym that I can get motivated to get out of bed for.
  • If i pack my bag for the gym and the day the night before...then i usually go to the gym in the AM before work. whenever i skip and think i'll go afterwards or work out at home-it never happens!!! :-(
  • I could have written your post! Although I gained weight during my pregnancies, after them I lost the weight real fast and looked good! then i came back to work and gained a lot back! I commute a lot each way and it is so hard to fit exercise in, but i know that only exercise is what is going to help me loose! so basically what i realize is that i can only exercise after 9pm at night.....this is when i have the time - the baby is in bed nad my DH will be putting our 4 year old to bed and then i can go exercise.....we have a small gym in our house - but life is so busy now and i am so tired....it is my sons bday today so i was busy getting everything ready for his bday party and now take down bday decorateons and put up christmas - so once it is all done i can get back into a routine.....but it is so hard! SO HARD! good luck to you! to all of us! :)
  • DH has gotten on a health kick lately, and though I am thrilled that he wants to do this, it puts such a strain on me cause he is working out for 45 min every morning and 45 min - 1.5 hours every evening.  So I am the one that is getting DS ready in the morning and the one who is putting him to sleep at night.  I am waiting until DH drops most of the weight he wants to lose, then I am going ot ask that he cut back on all the cardio he is doing and spending more time with us.  He says he wants working out to be something we do together...yeah maybe when a) DS is sleeping thru the night and I am not a walking zombie and b)he is old enough to play for longer periods of time with his toys.  We have a gym set up in the garage, so when he is old enough I could bring him out there with us and at least (hopefully) get 30 minutes of cardio in.  I just can't see more than that ever happening.
  • I just stick to the weekends and try to figure out a walk with the baby if I am too tired.  Its really tough, but as long as I run at least 1-2x a week I feel I will stay somewhat in shape, I know that when she gets older I will feel less guilty putting her at the daycare at the gym after work.
