HPV outbreak?

HI all

I am new here; just realized this very cool resource. Looks like everyone is pretty easy going so hoping someone has experienced this here and can put my mind at ease.

I'm 36w tomorrow. At my 34w appt my doc confirmed that I had experienced genital warts. Unfortunately yes- many many years ago my husband and I (at the time, just dating) both had to be treated for a mild outbreak - and then I completely forgot about it. (For those of you who do not know, apparently this strain of hpv is so common that at least 80% of us carry it but not everyone ever shows signs- until you have an outbreak, often when your immune system is low)

Anyway, I've been having a pretty good pregnancy and I kept saying that the ball has to drop eventually! Since my doctor reminded me of it- and I knew that when you are pregnant your immune system is working double time and may be compromised, I started checking every day in the shower. Everything does seem very different (swollen??) down there...however, I swear I feel two little bumps now!! It reminds me exactly of what I felt all those years ago. They are so small that unless I was being very particular to touch myself there (between Vag & bum) I would never have noticed. I'm sure they are warts. My husband does not have anything. I can't see my doc for another 5 days to confirm either...

TBH, the outbreak does not bother me but the fact that I'm going to be having babe in a few weeks while having an outbreak does bother me- of course! (if indeed that's what it is) So I have been doing some research, it seems like vaginal delivery is still "OK" (and c-section not recommended nor the reason) during an outbreak unless the warts are blocking the birth canal. Obviously I don't know what's going on inside and my doc will check but, if it's anything like last time, it was just a few on the outside. I am wondering if there is anyone on here who has successfully given birth vaginallly with a mild exterior outbreak?

Thanks!

I highly doubt that 80% of sexually active adults have the HPV virus that causes warts....

But I agree. talk to your doc and go about the best course of action.

The statement OP made was partially correct.  It is estimated that around 80% of sexually active adults will contract HPV at some point in their life:  https://www.pbs.org/now/shows/308/hpv-facts.html.  However, not all HPV strains cause warts or cervical cancer.  In fact, the majority of strains are asymptomatic.

Exactly. Most people never know unless they get an abnormal pap

Sept 2013 started TTC#2 (never got PP period so hoping for the first egg to drop)
Jan 2014 - diagnosed POF (Premature Ovarian Failure) and told pregnancy not possible without egg donor because my ovaries would never function again with my hormone levels (FSH 136, LH 98.6, AMH <.03, estradiol 0, HCG 7) - using acupuncture, chiropractic care and TCM herbs / supplements
March 11, 2014 ovulated despite every doctors prognosis!!!
Oct 2014 hormones (FSH 48, Estradiol 89, HCG 1) not good, but heckuva lot better!

Nov. 16, 2015 FET of single adopted 5AA embryo - BFN

  • UPDATE: (in case anyone is wondering)

I saw my doc today. She does not think there any warts, she said, maybe it's a skin tag. (I also have several on my neck, belly and breast) Apparently skin tags can be common, as hormones change. But she said even if it was, it was too small to care and would likely go away after birth anyway. She also told me that indeed, it is quite common for a pregnant woman to develop a wart, and never notice it...she said they often don't even tell the woman about it as it would only stress them out. I found this very interesting! (it usually goes away by the 6 week post partum check) And, either way, in the majority of cases they would still do a vaginal delivery. It's only in very rare cases that warts become so troublesome that a c-section would be required.

Also, it was my other doctor about 8 years ago that told me that 80% of sexually active adults do indeed carry this exact form of HPV. Yes,  there are many many strains. Some are asymptomatic, some MAY cause cancer later in life if not detected by a pap. Maybe her stat is high, I am not sure but basically she told me it is very very common but often people don't admit to it (it's embarrassing) and also that many people don't ever develop a wart, the virus stays dormant in their bodies for ever. It may come out under times of stress/immune system down.  She said, if you've ever had unprotected sex there is a high chance you could have this strain, and/or other strains. Nothing to fret about either.

    thanks all for your responses.
