night time issues

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to get other's opinions on if there is something I can do for my little one. My daughter has always been a terrible sleeper.  The past few months though she has slept through the night without needing a bottle. However, she still wakes up every night, once or twice a night.  Most nights, she doesn't need us to come in to help her get back to sleep. She will cry for 30-45 seconds and then goes to sleep. She does sleep with a soother so I'm wondering if that's the problem.

I went to her doctor for her immunizations today and she said that she thought it was nightmares. I don't really think that's going on every evening though because there hasn't been any major stressors in her life that could be creating this. We haven't used any cry it out methods in her sleep, but I know she can get to sleep on her own as we put her in her crib awake every night.

I would like to get this figured out because I don't want her to have such a disrupted sleep, and I am exhausted because I wake up every time she cries, and sometimes can't get back asleep for a little while.

Thanks!

Re: night time issues

  • I wouldn't stress about it if she only fusses for a few seconds, that sounds line a glorious amount of sleep to me. My 2.5 year old still wakes once a night and fusses a bit. I think most people wake a time or two a night, I know I always did prekids.

Plus nightmares can be triggered by anything even a growth spurt, it doesn't always have to do with a major change in their lives.

  • I wouldnt be concerned if she is only waking for such a short time and going right back to sleep.

It is totally normal for babies, and adults, to wake up a little bit while their brains shift from one sleep cycle to another. DD does the little scream and even sometimes sits up for a second before plopping over and heading back into deeper sleep. Nothing to worry about at all.

  • It sure sounds like she is crying out as she is moving through her sleep cycles.  At our housewe call this phantom baby cries.  Is it possible that what is keeping you awake is this thought that she is having nightmares.  Personally I have never even considered that LO could be having bad dreams.  Banish that thought from your head.  I don't think she is in need of any sleep training at all, and all though we didn't use the ferber method I did read a big chunk of his book and found his explanation of how babies sleep fascinating, if you wanted to read up on the science of it, maybe check it out.

  • Since she only cries for a tiny bit of time and settles herself back to sleep I don't see a problem.  My LO sometimes wakes at night and needs me to give him his paci to go back to sleep or even a bottle.  Last night I heard him wake 3 times but he just cried out briefly and then went back to sleep.  I didn't even need to get out of bed.

  • Thanks everyone for the feedback.  I have just returned back to work from my mat leave and I am finding it hard to have such a disrupted sleep and be at work all day, as well as I hadn't heard of any of my friend's kids or cousins doing this.  Don't get me wrong, I am happy she is able to settle herself down. I just thought it was odd that she would do this every night.  Will this get better as she gets older??

Be thankful she's not still getting up to eat many times a night. And like others said most people wake a few times a night even as adults. You will just learn not to wake every time or to ignore it. My oldest is 9 and gets up to pee at least once a week but I barely hear it and go right back to sleep.
