Pee in a cup.

At my first appointment at 9 weeks my doctors office had me pee in a cup. I've been two other times since then and have not been asked to pee in a cup again. I see everyone saying they are going to their appointments and peeing in a cup, blood pressure, Doppler, questions, the end. So is it normal to do this every time or am I missing out on something?

  • kinda weird.  i do it every single appt

  • Yup, I have to do it every time at my OB's.  I did it last time, too and I went with a group of MWs then.  It's to check for protein in the urine, I believe.

  • With my first, I had to do it at every visit. I have Kaiser now, and I've only had to do it at my first appointment.

This. They are checking for proteins and sugars in your urine so I would think they should be doing it at every appt.

  • So at my old office it was like clockwork.  Weight, BP, pee in cup, wait for doctor.

Now I get the cup at the end of my appointment.  I take the cup home and pee in it at home before my next appointment and then bring it with me.  It is so weird and disgusting to me that I am walking around with a cup of pee in my purse (that I have double bagged in ziploc baggies because of the obvious reasons).

  • Maybe it's because I'm in Canada but I've only had to pee in the cup once...my first visit after BFP.

  • I just called my office and they said they used to do it at every appointment to check for protein but there was a study done to show it wasn't as accurate as they thought. She said a 24 hour urine catch is much more accurate so that is what they do. I don't know what that is.. But it doesn't sound fun.

24hr is when you get to pee in an orange jug for an entire 24hrs, then store it in your fridge before carting back to your doc/lab. Fun right?

  • I have to do it every time.  Last time I was there she mentioned something about not having protein in my urine (which is good) so I figure that's what they're checking for.

Mine is every time. The standards are pee in cup, blood pressure, weight, and listen for fetal heart tones.

  • I have only ever had to at the initial intake appointment, and then once at the end of a pregnancy when my BP was a little high. That's with three pregnancies now (but two different hospitals/practices).

I had Kaiser with DD and I peed every. Single. Time. Maybe PP is right and it's just that they realized it was a waste of money, so now they do it less often.

I had Kaiser with DD too and I thought I peed every week then. Maybe they recently changed it.

At my old OB/MW's office I never peed in a cup besides the first time. Now at my new OB I do every appointment. No one has ever explained it to me why one place did and one didn't.

  • Mine actually gives me the cup ahead of time, and asks me to remember to pee in it first thing in the morning on the day of my appointment. I didn't particularly mind until there was...well, a leakage, resulting in the need for a new purse. I don't care that it's sterile!
