Weaning: 2 steps forward, 1 step back

I have still been nursing my 15 month old once in the morning when he wakes up and once at night before bed.  Four days ago, I used the La Leche recommended "don't offer, don't refuse" technique for the morning nursing session and LO seemed to not care about nursing that morning so I did not offer.  Instead, we went straight to the kitchen and shared a lively breakfast together with Sesame Street radio playing.  The same thing happened for the next three days in a row.  I thought we had started a new and fun bonding routine.  He seemed to not notice or care that we weren't nursing.  This morning, as we were leaving his room, he got very upset and started crying.  I put him down to let him lead me to where he wanted to go, and he walked back to his room and looked at my very pleadingly.  As soon as I reached for the nursing pillow, he calmed down.  Then he nursed very happily.  Is this normal?  Should I go back to the morning session?  Should I again not offer tomorrow morning?  What are people's thoughts on this situation?

Re: Weaning: 2 steps forward, 1 step back

  • It depends on you timeline and comfort level. When I weaned my DS, he would go for a few days without asking to nurse and then would want to. I would allow him to but cut the session short. Eventually he spread out the frequency of his requests. His last request was a month or so after the previous time.

Thanks everyone.  These answers are very helpful.  I had no idea that he might want to "go back" every now and then.  I will continue with "don't offer, don't refuse" for a while.
