12 MO won't drink cows milk?

parents out there have a question if someone has any info we'd appreciate it.
We've been trying to get Aian off formula to whole milk. Only problem is i'm guessing he doesn't like the taste? and spits it out immediately. A couple times we got him to actually drink a couple sips but like no more than 10 seconds later he throws it up. He's been on Similac: Alimentum since birth pretty much. Didn't have a milk allergy but regular formula gave him bad gas when he was small. I know the whole milk is important for the fat for brain development and all so i'm worried about it. Any input would be appreciated, we've tried looking this up a bit but can't find much info on it.

  • Have you tried just adding an ounce or 2 of Cow milk to his formula? Sometimes you can't just make the cold turkey leap. Try that and see if he goes for it. That's how I had to transition my 2nd. What about the temp? Is he used to cold drinks? I know my 1st doesn't really like certain drinks very cold, since we used room temp water for formula. Maybe let it sit out for a few so it isn't so chilly.

  • My LO did the same thing!  But now she loves milk. When we first tried milk, she spat it out and refused the bottle. After consulting the pediatrician, we started out giving her a bottle with 6 oz of formula and 2 oz of milk for a week.  The next week we did 4 oz of formula and 4 oz of milk.  And so on until she was just drinking milk. Also, we always heat up her bottles/ sippy cups because she refuses to drink cold milk.  That's what worked for us!  My pediatrician suggested that we do that because formula tastes sweeter than milk.  It really helped her get used to the difference in taste.

Good luck and hang in there!

whew!  i'm glad i found someone who wrote what i was going to write to save me all that typing!  we did exactly and they switched over no problem.  good luck!

  • I didn't read responses so far, but I had this problem.  LO was EBF, but same difference.  We now mix cow milk with 1/2 water and he drinks it.  I still nurse twice a day, but at least he is drinking some cow milk finally! Mixing wouldn't work for us...
  • Ditto the others.  If you did cold turkey a gradual approach might work better.  Same thing with the temperature although I normally see a temp preference with BF not FF babies.  Either way if that doesn't work it could just mean your LO's body isn't ready for CM and that's ok.  12 months isn't the magic number (same goes for many things that have to do with kids) so it's not the end of the world if LO doesn't like it or react to it well.  You can still give dairy in other forms.  With DD she wasn't fully ready until 15 months and DS didn't have it until 18 months.  Now, they both live by it.  Before that I just gave them Enfagrow and that worked fine for us.

  • Pick you LO fav fruit and blend it into the milk. I blend 2  frozen strawberries in 6oz of milk. My ds loves it. It tastes like melted strawberry ice cream.  He still only drinks a few ounces a day but it is a long way from the few sips he was taking. GL!
