Crawling and shorts

What do you ladies doing when it gets hot and baby is in shorts crawling around?  I have a very hard tile floor and I hate to have the kiddos hurting their knees.

Is something like this worth it?

Re: Crawling and shorts

  • My whole house is hardwood with a smattering of area rugs and I let Owen crawl bare-kneed. It never seems to bother him but he's a rough kid.

  • i want to add that I have noticed that it does bother Ayden.  He won't crawl normally on the tile, only on carpet.

I have hardwood, and just let my LO crawl around. She's got rough knees now - I just put extra moisturizer on them at night. I wouldn't do the knee pads myself, I would be afraid it might make her crawl unnaturally (assuming they are thick/ padded enough) and be too hot.

We have mostly carpet so it's not an issue for Hanna at home.  However at daycare they have more hardwood floors and I've noticed she just adapts and does the crawling on her feet and sticks her butt in the air.  It won't hurt them to crawl on the hard floors and if they really want to get somewhere they will accomplish it somehow.  I wouldn't change much IMO, but that's just me.  What are you going to do outside on the cement?

ouch, i never even thought about letting them crawl on cement, maybe only grassy areas.

Same here.  Only our bedrooms are carpeted (mostly ceramic throughout with 1 hardwood floor) and B's knees are pink, but they don't seem to bother him.  Unless he acts like they do, I'm not going to get anything.

The cement question is a good one, though.  When we're on cement, I move him to grass when possible.

  • We have mostly carpet and even then I'm afraid of rug burn. Growing up my knees would turn super dark and rough just from playing and I hated that so I want to avoid it with Emma. Most times I just put cropped leggings on her or leg warmers but I guess those will get hot soon. These look great! Not sure how long they would stay on though...

When K first started crawling, his knees got red and even a little swollen looking from crawling around. However, now that he has been crawling for a couple months (I keep him in shorts, Its hot here too!) he has built up tougher skin and crawls all over our hardwoods and our carpet with no issues. He has even figured out crawling on the concrete (he bear crawls)!
