Salary requirement help... Non Profit world

Hi Ladies. I'm applying for a position at a non profit and I have a great deal of experience, but a majority came from internships and volunteer work that I had to do in college. I work for a non profit now, and the pay is crap. I mean, complete crap. I do have a degree, but it wasn't required, and I am their volunteer coordinator. The company I am applying to now, wants a salary requirement letter, and I have never had to do one before. I have a really good shot at this position, and don't wanna screw it up. I know, non-profit workers don't make much, but I was thinking 28,000 to 32,000. The job is in North Charleston, SC if that helps, and I have been in the field for about four years. I am applying to two positions, one is a match coordinator, and the other is school liaison. Thank you all for whatever you can help me with.

Re: Salary requirement help... Non Profit world

  • I work in the non profit world and hire staff a lot but I think this is going to be really hard to answer for anyone unless they work in that area specifically. That type of salary would be low for even our start up community based workers with BAs, but high for say someone working in a residential placement. It varies so much on the position, the agency itself, the benefits they have otherwise that may compensate for a lower salary, and most importantly the city. Could you call a similar agency's HR department and say you are doing "research for a grad school project and seeking average salary amounts for a comparable position?"

  • I suppose I could do that. Thanks for the advice. I was thinking the same, bc some organizations have NO money and some do. I was looking at the cost of living and things like that, so I guess I will have to do more research. Thanks again.
  • Actually, doing some research online, and finding out a lot about them as far as salary. I guess I just want the job so bad bc I really want to move to SC. lol

One of the salary websites lets you put in a lot of specific information about your job in order to find comparable salaries.  I think that it might be payscale.com but I'm not 100% sure.

  • Wow, I actually know exactly what job you're talking about - I live like 2 blocks from that nonprofit, and a friend posted the listing to Facebook. So I know the area, but I don't have any nonprofit experience. I do know my friend worked at a domestic violence shelter very nearby, and I suspect that her salary was 30,000 or less. So I think you might be on the right track. I so hate when they ask for salary requirements. Good luck!

Thanks. I love the non profit world, and I love SC. lol Hopefully I will hear something back.
