Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Jarred baby food...

At what age do you stop feeding jarred baby food? I was at a 2yo birthday party where the birthday boy ate pizza and cake for lunch but his dinner was a large jar of sweet potato. I always thought after 1 year you would stop the purees and just do table food. Especially if they have all their teeth. Since I am a FTM when do you stop with the jarred stuff? I am making my own food so I am just curious...

Re: Jarred baby food...

  • Yeah, that's a little odd for a 2 yr old to be eating baby food. But he's still young enough for it not to really matter. Some 2 yr. olds are still breastfed, so they don't have to be on 100% table foods yet. It sounds like that kid was eating plenty of other foods, so maybe he just really likes those sweet potatoes? It would be weird if he ONLY ate pureed baby food, but a little bit is alright.

That being said- most babies do stop the purees around 10 months and switch over to mostly table food. And some people skip the purees altogether. So it just depends on the child's preferences and development.

  • Good heavens, he was two? My 8 month old eats table food i do realize many 8 month olds do not eat table food yet. But I guess I shouldn't judge, as perhaps there is a reason for the jar of sweet potatoes? Maybe it's his favourite thing? It's hard to stop giving a little one something if they absolutely loves it!

  • On their kitchen table they had over 10 jars of different jarred foods so I don't think it's just sweet potatoes. I will admit I'm not judging but giving the side eye a little. I believe the family eats a lot of take out and doesn't cook that often but I can't be positive.

Okay that's a different story. I guess I took it as just an occasional "snack" or something, since you said he was eating other stuff like pizza and cake. To each his own I guess. I doubt it will continue much longer, once he starts getting interested in a wider variety of foods.

  • My 2 year old still eats those plum pouches. It's sometimes the only veggies we can get into her some days. However, I think spoon feeding a toddler is a little odd.

It does seem kind of odd, but maybe he's a picky eater and that's mom's way of getting him his veggies. That's the only thing I can think of.

  • DS was pretty much done with purees by about 10 months and started just eating table food. It seems odd to me that a 2 year old would eat jarred baby food, but maybe it's the only way he eats sweet potatoes.
