Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Eczema

My 14 month old DS has always had eczema on his legs, but it's been under control and mild.  Within the past week or two it continues to getting worse, which also coincided with the warmer weather.  He also switched from alimentum to whole milk around 12.5 months, but allergy testing showed that he does not have an allergy.  We have been using aquaphor, but it seems to not be helping.  I'm going to give his doctor a call in the morning.  Anyone have any advice/experience with eczema?  Thanks!

Re: Eczema

  • Eczema can coincide with environmental allergies sometimes. Does he have any nasal/eye allergy symptoms?

  • He has had a runny nose since Sunday but its gotten better every day. I thought it was from teething! Maybe it is an allergy.

  • DD got bad eczema the same time we tried cow's milk.  She also got diarhhea so we took her off the milk and both cleared up fairly well.  We did end up getting an RX for hydrocortisone cream, which was really helpful.  We haven't tried milk again since, and she hasn't gotten the eczema either.

  • I've dealt with it with both my kids and it gets horrible when the weather gets warm in the summer and dry in the winter.  DS has it really bad right now on the back of his legs and around his ankles and on his back.  I've tried tons of stuff, but what I've found works best is Curel Itch Defense.  It's backed by the american eczema association and has done a great job giving him some comfort for the itching, and when I use it after every diaper change I can see quite a bit of improvement in the color of his skin.  And on the bottle it says it's safe for babies over 6 months.

  • Thank you so much for the replies!  I am going to try a new lotion with him.  And  I guess I need to use it more frequently during the day.  We are using Tide free and clear detergent and use Aquaphor body wash sparingly during baths.

Based on my experience, I wouldnt put much faith in the allergy testing. My DS started getting eczema at 14 mo's and it gradually got worse and worse. We had him tested for allergies and everything came back negative. We decided to do an elimination diet and take out eggs, cow milk, nuts, tomatoes, wheat, citrus and it went from a 9/10 to barely there now. Also, coconut oil on this skin after a bath works really well too.

Wow!  Did you notice the eczema as soon as he transitioned to milk, or did it take a while to get worse?  What is your DS drinking instead of cow's milk?  Thank you for the coconut oil suggestion too!

  • I have read that epsom baths help with eczema.  You might want to try adding 1/4 - 1/2 cup of epsom salts to his bath, maybe every other bath, to see if that helps.  I have also read that coconut oil helps with dry skin.  With coconut oil it  comes in more of a solid form so you have to warm it up in your hands to be able to put it on.

  • DS has eczema and is allergy related. Soon as we took him off dairy and gave him coconut milk he got much better. We also had him allergy tested but it came back negative. However our pedi said don't go by it 100 percent. If he has a reaction to milk then don't give it to him.
I actually timed it the last time we tried whole milk yogurt his eczema broke out within 3 hours.
  • I have severe eczema.  I've been flaring since last October (with recurrent staph infections) and we can't figure out why.  I had allergy testing, and all food allergies came back negative, but environmental allergies came back with a high positive to grass, trees, dust, etc.  I'm seeing a holistic doctor (since conventional doctors and my dermatologist haven't been able to help), and she put me on an elimination diet even though all my food allergies tested negative.  I am eating basically meat, vegetables, fruits, oils, and nuts.  No sugar or sweeteners, no soy, no wheat, no dairy.  So far, it hasn't made a difference.

I guess I don't have any advice, but I did want to let you know that they still suspect food is an issue even though I tested negative for all food allergies.

  • My daughter kept breaking out with eczema after staying the night at her Oma's (Grandma in German).  We finally made the connection with the detergent she was using on the clothes she buys for my daughter and dresses her in when she spends time there.  We now give her the homemade detergent we use to wash my daughter's clothing in.  We rarely have had any problems since.

I got the recipe off of the Duggar Family website.  My students at school actually make it and sell it as a fundraiser for their environmental group.  I have had alot of people tell me it does wonders for their family members with the same eczema problem.  Can't hurt to try it out...AND it is CHEAP!  Nothing like helping the wallet too.

    Good Luck!

  • One of my twins had bad eczema appear around 19 mo old.  We knew that him and his identical brother were likely allergic to cow's milk, so we took them to an allergist to test.  Turns out they were also allergic to numerous things including peanuts which they ate regularly.  I was really surprised but when I stopped giving them peanut butter his eczema went away.  We also switched laundry detergents, lotioned him heavily with lubriderm after baths and aquaphor is it was really bad, and kept the bath water not as warm.  Our allergy Dr. also told us to put baby oil in the bath water and not to use soap every time.
  • My DS has it bad we went through so many products trying to sort it out. We started with aquaphor then we used aveeno for a while but I saw a real improvement with the honest company's healing balm and lotion.
