NBFR, tablets

DS got an IPad at his Dads house for his birthday. I was pretty against it at first because that is a very extravagant gift for a six year old. However, I have seen the kids playing with it and they really do have fun with the Apps. DD showed me how to color and bake cupcakes on it.

Now I'm toying with the idea of getting a cheaper tablet that I can download apps on for them to use on rainy days or car rides. I'm clueless about electronics and what is good and what sucks. I was thinking maybe a kindle fire, as I also like to read and it would be good for that.

Anyone here have any good recs? Or a link to a site that compares different ones.

I have a Samsung Galaxy...love it.  Everyonce in awhile, you can find them on Groupon Goods for $249 for the 10" or $199 for the 7".

  • I got my 2 year old a Zeepad. It is only $80 on Amazon and he LOVES it. It's really easy for you to download apps and he navigates it with no issues. It is an Android tablet. I would highly recommend it.

I have a Zeepad for myself. I only use it to read at the moment since we do not have Internet at home. I use my mobile phone to Bump and do school work or anything else. The only thing I dislike about my Zeepad is that it is slow. Other than that, I like it well enough.

I threw a fit about SD getting a tablet against my wishes from the grandparents for Christmas. Turned out that it had to be returned anyway. Now we are looking at getting her a Zeepad or something when we get internet at home hopefully later this year. I am terrified of her having unsupervised internet access. Kids are sneaky and DH isn't on the same page as me as far as tech safety goes. But as long as I can put parental controls on it, such as the internet not being able to be opened without a password, the device.not being able to be accessed without a passowrd unknown to SD, etc, I think I am ok with it now.

We were looking at the Nabi? I think is what it is called. A tablet specifically for kids. I know many parents who say their kids LOVE it. But SD says she does not want one. Since it is about 200, I will let her have the say on that. We will just get something cheaper.

I have both an iPad and an iPad mini. I love the mini. It's a little more expensive than the kindle fire, but I like it much more.

  • I really like the kindle fire. I just got my 10yo DS a cheapy tablet from big lots for 60 bucks and he can play the games and download the apps and things. It also has the parental security on it where you can block different sites. He gets to play with mine but I got him a cheaper one because he has ADHD and if he gets upset about a game or something tends to break things, also loses, leaves his expensive things laying around or at other people's houses. It's Coby brand and it's pretty sturdy. I still need to get him a protective case for it though.
