Expired carseat. WDYT?

Baby #4 is due 1/20/14 and our Chicco Keyfit 30 expires in May of 2014. Our other 3 were only in a bucket seat for 9 months before we switched over to a convertible so hypothetically baby will only use the seat until September. Should I buy a new seat or would you use the expired seat from May-September?

Re: Expired carseat. WDYT?

  • Why not switch to a convertible when the KeyFit expires in May?

  • Would you drive around with baby not strapped in? In my eyes that is the same as using an expired seat. They expire for a reason. I would use the infant seat until it expires then switch to a convertible. Dd switched at 4 mos and was fine.

  • Use the seat till may. Don't use after expiration date. I would get a convertible at that time or see if anyone has an infant seat you can borrow.
  • I'd use the seat until May. I wouldn't use it expired.

  • Count me in on not using an expired seat. It's not a gimmick, really. Plastic wears out. Just use the convertible earlier than you're used to.

Yep. I wouldn't use it past the expiration date.

    I agree with this.

  • I would not use an expired seat. While I don't think that it suddenly goes from perfectly safe to perfectly unsafe overnight expiration dates on carseats exist for a reason and if I was using an expired seat and something happened I'd never forgive myself. Not to mention that if the seat failed and your child was injured you'd have no recourse.

This.  I would use the infant seat a few months and switch the convertible earlier than you planned.  If you really want to keep him in the infant seat...maybe buy a cheaper one (since they all have the same safety standards, after all).

  • I know I will get smack for this, but I would use it.  It is not like it will be years past expiration.  Like another said, nothing magically changes the day it expires.  Some people are very cautious, I suppose I am more casual about some things, but I would use it
  • Car seats don't "expire" everywhere in the world...has your seat been exposed to extreme teperatures for long periods of time was it in the car in the garage or was the car out in the sun all the time.
If you feel safe and the car seat hasn't been exposed to extreme temps I'd be inclined to use it. I know I may get flamed for this but this is based on the EU car seat regulations etc.

  • You can actually take your car seat to a fire station and they can inspect it and put a new expiration date sticker on it!
