Banging his head- your opinions needed.

Seth has been banging his head when he gets angry. Now I realize that this is a self-correcting problem. I mean, you get action/consequence all at the same time. So, I really don't have to correct him at all.

But, does anyone have any experience or suggestions about this behavior?

  • My boys do this. They head butt each other when they're angry or head bang the ground. But they also have evolved this behavior to playtime as well. It took awhile for that to happen but one day it became a game to head butt each other. I think it's a behavior that will lose its luster after time, I really wouldn't worry too much about it.

  • DD does this when she's tired or frustrated. She does it a lot less than she used to, and my pedi recommends to not make a big deal of it, and eventually she'll just stop, but she bangs her head hard enough to leave marks sometimes. I hope she figures it out completely soon.
  • I've heard it's a self-soothing technique?

  • C does this as well (and has for months).  Our doc (and my husband) say it is no big deal--obviously it doesn't feel great when they do it, so they will learn their lesson eventually.

  • Ian gets pissed and slings himself all over the place...yay tantrums.  If he hits his head in the process, he'll bang it again on purpose.  Then gets mad because he's hurt his head, so he screams some more.  Ohhhhh, the joy!  He's been doing it for a while now, so this whole process happens a lot less.  I think he finally learned that banging his head hurts.  So, I say it's just a phase, let him do it(with some supervision of course) and don't make a huge deal out of it.  The "fun" of it will go away.

Our pedi says its normal and self soothing. I have a hard time figuring out how but it seems to be true. He bangs his head when he frustrated or bored.

I asked the pedi because I was super concerned about this. Colton does it on ANY surface, even once on the driveway. The Pedi said let it go (obviously not on the driveway, but YKWIM). He said it happens and if you go pick them up it's just giving into the tantrum.
