Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Toys for air travel

We will be taking a plane ride when DS is about 20 months.  What are some simple toys you found were easy to take on a plane and kept your toddlers occupied?

DD is 22mo.  For air travel we've done a travel magnadoodle (no mess, but still able to go crazy with drawing), pop-up books, flash cards, stickers, and a new toy that we don't show her until we get on the plane.  This toy is usually light up or makes music so that it takes up 30mins or so exploring it.

I know some parents take portable DVD players.  So if you're LO has a favorite cartoon or movie, that might be an option, too.  Even if it's not a show, you could get the Disney or National Geographic animal specials if your LO is learning about animals.  For example, DD is in a "fishy" phase ever since we went to the zoo and aquarium.  So we picked up Disney's Ocean DVD.  She has no interest in regular television, but she loves to point out different fish when we pop the Ocean DVD in. Good luck and happy flying!

Do you have an iPad? Fisher Price has some great apps that just require baby to touch the screen to get a response.

  • I think it depends upon if you are doing an infant in lap or not. The first time LO was on a plane she didn't want anything to do with any thing i brought except her book. All of our flights have been going through the skymall magazine and naming what we can find on the pages.
  • We travel a lot. With our 15 month old believe it or not "color wonder" markers are fun. You have to help her a little but they are not messy. Also snacks keep her busy. Any new toys of course. And also this crayola board we got you fill the pen up with water and write on this white board that turns different colors. Over all just keeping them engaged in everything constantly!

I just did a solo trip and LO was awesome.  We just had his Thomas and a couple of other trains.Mostly read books (I brought like 6 or 7, because I knew I'd have to reread them) and he watched half hour of a show on our portable dvd player on the way.  He was so excited when the flight attendant brought snacks and a drink for him. He didn't eat the snacks, I think he was just excited about it. He also enjoyed looking out the window, and thought the turbulence was hilarious. He was really calm.

I like the magnadoodle idea, and will get one for our next trip in a couple of weeks!
