I can't even believe this happened. I feel like such an idiot and so thankful to have this board because I'm sure everyone can understand how awkwardly sad this moment was for me!
I was out getting ice cream with my best friend who knows all about our IF struggles and while talking I ran into an old friend who I hadn't seen in a year. He mentioned I must be busy. Having just talked to my best friend all about scheduling and fertility drugs, I simply nodded and I THOUGHT I had muttered (under my breathe) 'yeah busy trying to make a baby'.
Turns out I was louder than intended. Friend looked at me for a second but we said goodbye and he walked out.
I got a text 10 minutes later "Good luck with the baby."
You think that'd be enough of an embarrassment but I was so involved in my current conversation that my mind quickly turned that into "he must have overheard the IVF conversation and is saying good luck with that"
So I stupidly said "THANK YOU".
30 minutes later as I was checking the time I caught a glimpse of the real message and then promptly had to send a depressing message of "Oh I'm not pregnant!"
This comes after a bfp announcement from a coworker earlier this week so I was already a little extra sensitive.
Anyone else have any awkward moments to share or social lessons they learned while going through this?
I know I'll NEVER mutter anything baby related to someone who doesn't know the whole situation again. Or at least during vent sessions with the bf I'll make sure they are somewhere private so I can be irrational and not have to think too hard ![]()
Re: Am I the only one?! Social skills & IF...
Oh no! Sorry. I had a similar experience at Walmart the other day. I bought a pack of OPKs and the lady checking me out mistook them for hpts. She scanned them and asked me "are you hoping the test is positive." I was taken aback and didn't know what to say. I just said "we'll see" hoping the generic answer would keep her from asking any other questions. Not the case. She asked if we wanted a baby and then proceeded to tell me about her 18 yo BFF who just found out she was pregnant! I kind of kicked myself because I should have just ended the conversation before it ever started but I was so petrified at these questions from a stranger that I just stood there. Ugh.

Sorry you were forced into an uncomfortable situation, but hopefully you won't have to see that guy for a while!
::thunderous applause:: Good for you, Naria!!
Thanks everyone, that made me feel a ton better! IF is such a crappy thing to go through that it's easy to let it come out at the worst of times.
It still blows my mind that when buying hpts/opks people feel they get a right to comment on it!
oh & Naria - good for you! I feel like I always let people get away with rude comments because they 'don't know better' but that's because we don't call them out on it.
