Not doing cereal?

Is anyone else not doing cereal at all? I breast feed and pump while at work and am planning on DD having solely BM until 6 months. At that point I'll start introducing foods like broccoli, avocado, banana, etc... (BLW for those familiar). I wanted to see if anyone else on here was also skipping the cereal?

  • No cereal here. When she grabs food off my plate and eats it, then we've started solids. ;-)

I'm skipping cereal. We actually have done some purees apples, bananas at dinner and he's been doing great! DS is just about 5 months, and I plan to EP and do purees once a day until 6 months, where I'll start doing more of a blw introduction to real food. I know it's not traditional, but I feel like it will work for us!

  • I'm waiting for the developmental milestones the. Doin blw. Cereal is useless for them so why waste the money? And I bought a training bottle too so it will move him from a regular bottle to one with handles then to a sippy so he won't waste too much breastmilk while learning to use a cup.

Lol my son would already be eating then! Before 4 months old he was watching us eat intently. Starting around 4 months he started leaning toward our plates and opening his mouth. I am going to talk with his pedi about skipping cereal. My sister says not to because it helps their belly get ready for real food. At the same time I know it has not nutritional value. I am really leaning towards no cereal though.

  • I planned to with DD1 but my pedi urged us to either add in a litle cereal with whatever real food we were feeding, or do an iron supplement since DD1 was born at 36 weeks and even more likely than your average baby of being iron deficient. DD1 hated the vitamin drops so I just added a little oat cereal to whatever I was squishing up that day. I'll probably do the same this time with a combo or purees and BLW type stuff. With second kids, I think they're more likely to end up eating whatever is easiest anyway.
  • We won't do cereal. I want to start with avocado & banana too, I'm a little worried broccoli would make DD too gassy right off the start.
  • We're skipping cereal completely.

We tried it once with DS last time, he wasn't ready for solids.  By the time we tried again I realized that it wasn't necessary so we went straight to trying real foods.  So we essentially skipped it last time too.

I planned on skipping cereal, but DD has reflux and I've heard that it can help so I'm going to try it when she's 6 months. I bought an organic brand.

We're skipping feeding cereal from a spoon we have put a small amount in his bottle due to reflux and wanting to avoid meds. We'll start with fruits and veggies around 6 months.

. My sister says not to because it helps their belly get ready for real food.

Not true. Cereal and grains can actually damage infant GI tracts. New studies show they can cause serious issues.
Also to the pp mentioning BFing causing iron issues. Also crap. Do your research. Breastmilk is a complete nutrition and all your child needs the first year. Food shouldn't be the main nutrition in your child's diet until after a year. BM or formula is the main staple. You're trying foods not food training them. They'll get the iron they need from whichever you're giving them milk wise.

  • Yep, I skipped cereal cause I really don't trust it as being a first food. My Lo is 6 months and I started with banana. So far, I am using https://goodmomming.com to get recommendations.
  • No we are not there GI tracts cannot handle it.....We will start with avacado, poss egg yolks, sweet potatoes etc....i am doing veggies first for awhile as I do not want her wanting fruit aka sweets over veggies :)

The weston price foundation is a great resource.....it's worth checking out. We also love Sally Fallons book Nourishing Traditions :)

    I also follow a good TCM's site......the holistic squid ;)

    This!

Although DD1 was born at 36 weeks and breastfed we still did Polyvi Sol vitamins because she had some bleeding in the head at birth.  I would not look to food as the source of vitamins.  BM or Formula is the main source and if extra is needed i'd seek vitamins.  Good luck!
