what to do during ferber checks

I've read the book, but I'm not clear.  I know you do not pick them up to feed during checks. You can pat them, but do you speak?

Re: what to do during ferber checks

  • I usually just rub her back for a minute and do the "shh" sound. I think a lot of people just adapt to what their LO responds to. That works for us (so far), so I'm sticking with that. As far as I know, the important thing is just not picking them up.

  • As long as you don't pick up your baby or allow them to fall asleep while you are comforting them you can do whatever you feel comfortable with. I would pat my baby's back and talk softy to him. To be honest it didn't really make much difference, he would still be just as upset when I was trying to comfort him as when he was alone. It was really hard to leave him while he was so upset, but so worth it, the Ferber method definitely worked for us.

  • I just replace the paci, if necessary, pat on the back or tummy and leave. I only stay for a few seconds.
