Hep C and baby

Hi everyone, I'm new over here and have been doing some lurking. I'm not sure if I am posting this in the right place or not, so you can steer me in the right direction.

Several years ago 05 to be exact I was diagnosed with hep c. I went through treatment. It worked while I was on it, but when I was done, it came back. A doctor told me to wait a few years as new treatments would be out. After getting married last year I consulted a new doctor. I was set to start treatment again, but out of pocket costs after insurance and Co pay programs were thousands a month. So, it was quite cost prohibitive.

Anyway. On to my question. Have any of you had babies with hep c? I was told a baby would not get it while in the womb, but there was a chance during birth. My blood counts are quite low and the hep doesn't cause me any issues. I feel like I'm not getting the answers I want from my doctors and I was hoping someone has been through this.

Re: Hep C and baby

  • On some of it our family has dealt with it.  On the treatments, my heart goes out to you, they're HELL!  My direct family member also experienced what you did, went through treatment only for it to come back about 6mo after treatment had ended.  The drug company is required by law to provide assistance for those who cannot afford the medication, contact them, it is WELL worth your time and effort!!!  Go through the treatment again, it's worth it for the extra life to your years and hopefully a transplant if you'll qualify or if the Hep C goes away, and you don't need to, even better!

As for the not getting answers, find some different docs to ask!  You just have to!  Talk to the docs at Mayo since they're also tied in with some of the treatment studies.  Talk to your doctors about options and testing. It's not the end of the world to run a lab for Hep C on your LO since there was a chance of transmission and subsequent follow-up labs say in a year or two.

Good luck!  Yes, the treatment is cost prohibitive, but there are few other options.  Quality time to your years is worth it!!!!
