Developmental Pediatrician 1st apt.

Hi there! I've posted a few times before. My son will turn 3 in August and is currently in EI for Speech, Special Instruction and OT once a week. He also receives OT and Speech once a week privately. Our pediatrician believe he has ASD. I have also heard others suggest SPD. He is very sensory seeking, low attention.

We currently have a 1st Developmental Pediatrician appointment scheduled at CHOP in June and at DUPONT in July. Are any of you familiar with the process? Do they usually do a screening and give you a diagnosis the first meeting or do you come back? Also, have any of you gone for a second opinion. We kept the appointment at DUPONT just in case we don't like CHOP.

I've never been to that hospital, but we've been through an intensive eval with a neurodevelopmental pediatrician. For us, it was a three hour appointment. She took an intensive history of her- how her birth was, how she was as an infant, when she hit milestones, what she was doing now, etc. at the same time she had an intern on the floor with her with a variety of toys and she was checking out how she interacted/ what her play skills were like. After that she did some testing of her on her own-had her mimic what she did, puzzles, etc. she told us on the spot her thoughts. She doesn't suspect autism so she didn't have us do a separate eval. She said come back in six months and in the meantime go to the geneticist for testing.

I had the same wiggy problem...you have to update it like three times. If I recall, it works better if you sign in to the nest. No advice for your post, just wanted to help if I can! GL!

Our first assessment was a ninety-minute play session with a neurologist at an autism center. She had us come back a week later for the diagnosis. Our second opinion through Children's entailed a four-hour assessment with a developmental pediatrician and a child psych running the ADOS, the Vineland, the Bayley Scales, etc. They, too, had us come back after a week to discuss results and diagnosis.

As to getting a second opinion, the additional reports with the formal test results have come in very handy. My husband also needed to hear everything twice to begin to accept the Dx.

My son just went in for testing and saw a neuropsychologist. They did a test by playing with him for about a half an hour and they diagnosed him with ASD during that same meeting. It might just depend on where you go and what their procedures are.

I think it depends what you are going for. My oldest son went to CHOP in AtlanticCounty, NJ for an evaluation/diagnosis for FASD. That appointment was based on all the information we gave them, an interview with us, and their observing my son. It was short in person, but the document review took months before we had our official report with the findings.

My youngest is scheduled to see the same doctor because we have concerns that he's having some kind of processing issue. His appointment is scheduled for February, and to be honest, I have no idea what it will entail but am expecting it to be quite different than my older son's appointment.

Can I ask when you scheduled your appointment at CHOP? How long did you have to wait to get in?

We started the process about 9 months ago. And just scheduled last week.

We're in a different state, but our first appt at the devel pedi was about 4 hrs long. There was a dev pedi and a school psyc who did it together. DH, DS's EI and I were all there along with DS. Much of the time, one of the evaluators would be in one room with DS doing assessments while I was in another room with the other evaluator getting interviewed/filling out questionnaires (after sending in quite a bit of paperwork in advance with his history, etc). They asked us to come back for the ADOS, and then we came back again about a week after that for the feedback appt where they gave us the diagnoses and suggestions for treatment and follow-up.
