3 carseats in a Subaru Legacy anyone?

Anyone have 3 across in a Subaru Legacy? We have a 2011, the plan is to trade in our truck for an SUV for me to drive and DH will drive the Legacy to work. He'd only need to put the kids in it a few times a month maybe. Can it be done? Which seats should I use?

I will have one forward-facing 4-year-old in a 5-point harness seat, one forward-facing 2-year-old in a convertible and one rear-facing newborn.

This was a surprise pregnancy, so I'm trying to think of ways to make things work without having to trade in both cars.

  • I always here the carseat people suggest the Radians.  They say, "It's cheaper to buy 3 new carseats than it is to buy a new car."

I did actually suggest this to a friend that has a surprise 3rd preg and she is able to make it work in her crossover SUV with only one radian.

  • We have a 2010 Legacy, and we fit 3 radians across the back seat.  Two FF'ing and one RF'ing.  We put the RF'ing seat behind the passenger, because the center seat doesn't have a lower LATCH set of anchors, and it's just easier to install the FF'ing car seats with the seat belt.

So, FF'ing DS1 is behind the driver, FF'ing DS2 is in the middle.  DD will be RF'ing behind passenger.

Right now, they're all FF'ing for a 4 year old that I drive around frequently.

  • That's a very tight one, but I believe it has been done. Having one FF and two RF may make it easier. Do you need an infant bucket or would you be willing to start the baby in a convertible in that car?

I would definitely look at radians. I also have read that they puzzle well with graco myrides if they're facing the same direction, so that may be an option.

I well know the stress of getting all the kids in a small car. DH drives a beetle, which can only fit 2 kids in back (no third seatbelt) so he cannot take all 3 kids and his car! So far it hasn't been a problem but I may return to work and if that happens we may have a serious issue and may have to consider trading the beetle in  :(
