New Diaper Genie defective???

We bought the Diaper Genie 2 Elite (the one with the foot pedal) for our first baby. The lid peg broke and the manufacturer refused to do anything about it. We made it limp along a few more months. We ended up buying what we thought was the same thing to replace it and also bought one for the baby on the way a few weeks ago. With the refill in (I tried both the refill that was in our old unit and the one provided with the new unit), the result is the same: the lid will not close all the way. We were also blown away at how cheap the new units appear to be compared to our old one from less than 2 years ago. The plastic is just not very rigid.

Long story short, we are planning to return both for the lid not closing. The smell is horrid since the lid will not close all the way and we are at our wits end for trying to make it work. Can anyone recommend a GOOD diaper pail? Obviously we do not want to go from bad to worse and liked the Diaper Genie until it broke.

  • I say just get a cheap garbage basket with a lid, and spend the extra money on Febreeze scented bags.

  • Just do a simple closing lid with scented trash bags and some baking soda tossed in there. Change frequently. I change our diaper trashcan every day.

  • I never understood the point of the diaper genie. Seems just as easy to take the trash out daily.

They have the same thing for litter boxes now too... But just take out the trash when you scoop the litter!

Since you ask for a pail rec. if we used disposables still I would for sure rebuy/use the munchkin one at target. Has a spot to fill with baking soda and if you tightly wrap the diaps you can fit a ton in it.

    Baby Trend Diaper Champ deluxe.
I have used it with no issues for 2 kids so far and will not need to get replace for this round. We have never purchased the recommended bags for it, just put garbage bags. It always worked great.
  • We had the baby trend diaper champ also with dd1. Regular garbage bags fit it and it was great. We didnt keep it around for baby 2 since dd1 has been out if diapers for a year and we are doing cloth this time, but I'm sure it would have been fine for this baby also.

  • We just put them in the regular garbage can, if they are really smelly I tie them in a grocery bag before dropping it in, but we take our garbage out daily. I found that diaper pails stink way too much and are just an extra unneeded step.
  • Diaper champ is what we used and it worked well. We put baking soda tablets in the bottom and used grocery bags so we didn't have to spend money on bags.
