August 2011 Moms

still BF?

Hi, I am lurker/occasional poster. I am starting to be more active now that we are TTC. I have a question for any Aug moms that are still BF or maybe just weened. My Aug '11 DD is stiff BF 2-4x/day. My initial goal was 6 months, and then 12 months. Once I made it to 12 months, we just kept going. She doesn't show any signs of weening. Now that we are going to TTC#2, I'd like to think about weening her. I just don't think I am up for tandem nursing, and I am worried about what she will think or do when she sees her brother or sister nursing. Any advice from anyone on weening, or anyone with similar situation? Thanks!

  • I agree: cross that bridge when you get there. You can easily still nurse her a few months into the pregnancy. Or maybe she'll be like my DD2 and it won't be an issue: she self-weaned when I got pregnant with Baby Boy because of (I assume) the change of taste in my BM.

  • We just weaned about a month ago. It took forever, but I'm glad it ended the way it did. I focused on cutting out one session at a time through distraction. I changed up so many routines and offered a lot of snacks before usual nursing session times so he wouldn't be as hungry and need to eat. I also got those chocolate straws as something special to distract him.

I got a surprise BFP last month and was still BFing DS as much as 4-6x a day. He has recently dropped down to once a day, and it is working well for both of us right now.

I agree with everyone else. Don't rush it, but you can try to encourage her to drop a feeding by offering a snack or sippy instead. Weaning is hard. You just sort of have to follow your toddler's cues.
