I have some Melissa and Doug wooden magnetic letters that seem pretty good. The magnet is exposed but it covers the entire letter and is pretty well glued on.
Also if you can find a used leapfrog fridge phonics, those letters have magnets encapsulated. I wish leapfrog would make the fridge phonics magnets again, they get great reviews.
Not fridge magnets, but there are foam bath alphabets that might be fun.

I was looking at the leapfrog ones, they seem to be selling for $$$ on ebay.
We have some fridge animal magnets from T.S. Shure that are a wood base with a magnetic backing covering the letter similar to that used in magnetic business cards, so no worries about danger of swallowing small magnetic pieces. They stick well and I've seen alphabet versions of their magnets as well.
You can do the melissa and Doug wooden ones. The magnant is a sticker that is the whole size of the letter. Or else the leap frog fridge phonics is awesome.
Re: Letter magnets?
something big enough to not be a chocking hazard, and where the little magnets arent just glued on the back so they can fall off and be eaten
will check out the teacher stores, thanks!
