How much does your 4 year old sleep?

DD just turned 4 and I'm wondering if her sleeping habits are typical?  She sleeps about 11 hours and night then most days a good hour to and hour an 20 minute nap.  I put her to bed about 8 pm (she usually takes about 20 minutes and a few "bathroom" trips to fall asleep) and she's up about 7 am.  Also it doesn't matter what time I put her to bed she's usually up at 7 am. So if for some reason we put her to bed a 9 pm she's still up at 7 am and doesn't have a longer nap that day.

Re: How much does your 4 year old sleep?

  • DS is only 3 but he has roughly the same sleep and wake times as your DD, only he doesn't nap. But he also wakes up the same time most days regardless of staying up late. Like last night we were visiting my parents and he was up until 8:30 central, which is 9:30 for him, but still woke up at his normal time of 7 eastern, which meant 6 am central. Fun times.

  • We're lights out at 7:30 and he's usually up by 6:30. No nap.
  • My DD usually doesn't take a nap anymore.  She turned 4 about a month ago.  She "rests" in her room for an hour but fights nap at all costs. Occasionally, she will fall asleep, like 1x per week.  She goes to bed at 7pm every night, wakes at 12/12:30am climbs in our bed (ugh) and sleeps until 7/7:30am- sometimes 8am if I'm lucky.

My dd2 hasn't napped in 2.5 years.. she is 4.5 now. Bedtime is around 7:30 and she is up between 67.

  • When DS had just turned 4, he slept from 7:30-7ish with a 2 hour nap.

DD is almost 4 and sleeps from 7:30-8 with no nap.  She could take a nap most days, and occasionally still does, but with DS not napping I stopped trying with her.  She wouldn't fall asleep until late in the afternoon and then wouldn't fall asleep at night until late.

  • At 4 DD slept from about 8:30-8:00 with an hour nap sometimes. Her nap became hit or miss around 3.5 or so.

  • I have a 3 yo & a 5 yo so I'll answer.

5 yo has not been willingly napping since she was about 3.  She may fall asleep if she is sick or something.  She sleeps 8:30 pm - 8 am.  Yesterday she slept until 8:45 am, today little sis woke her at 6.

3 yo goes to bed at 8:30, sleeps until 6:30-7 usually.  She still takes a 1-2 hour nap.

DS goes to bed at 8:00 and usually wakes up around 6:30 - 7:30.  He still will take a 2 hour nap some days, which he no longer needs.  On days when he takes a nap, it takes him about 1 to 1.5 hours to fall asleep.  On days when he doesn't take a nap, he goes to sleep immediately.  I think soon I'm going to stop the nap and have him go to bed at 7:30.

DD sleeps 11-12 hours at night and no nap. During school she slept 7:30-7ish. Now that they are out of school she is sleeping 8:30-8ish.

Thank you for all the feedback.  It seems that she's pretty much on track.  Her naps are becoming tricky, about 20% of the time she fights them so much it takes her almost an hour before she falls asleep then it's around 3:30 pm and she wakes up around 4:30 which makes her take forever to fall asleep at bedtime.  I've considered trying to nix the naps but if she doesn't nap she's a total mess come 6 pm. I love that she still naps because I can get things done around the house (or sometimes nap myself) during that time but hate that sometimes it makes bedtime a nightmare!

  • DD's wake up time only varies by about 45 minutes no matter what time she goes to bed.

She sleeps about 11 hours a night.  No nap.

My 4 year old sleeps 11 hours at night and naps 4-5 times a week for 1 and half hours.
  • DS1 stopped napping at 3.5. Mainly bc he started afternoon preschool at that point, but also he wasn't falling asleep at a reasonable hour when he napped. He sleeps from roughly 8 pm to 8 am.
    DS1 - Feb 2008

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • DS1 will be 4 on Thursday. 8:30 to 7:00-8:00 in the morning. He usually takes a 2-3 hour nap in the afternoon. Ditto on the later bedtime doesn't equal an earlier wakeup.
