Bathtime woes

How are you all doing w bathtime? Unless I get in there w her, LO won't sit down in the tub and wants to get out. Anyone btdt, and how'd you get lo over it? My older dd always loved bathtime so this is a new problem for me.

Also, she won't look up for hair rincing, so the tear free cup I bought is useless... Water always gets in her eyes. Any tips?

Re: Bathtime woes

  • My lo always tries to get out too! I'd love to know what has worked for others.

  • We still use a bath for her - The First Years tub.  She's getting a little big for it but it really works well for us.  We clean her off and then she gets to play with toys.  She seems to not mind the little tub and it's much easier/quicker for us then filling up a bathtub full of water.
  • Ds loves bathtime but he does try to stand up in the bath tub. I have a non slip matt in the tub so he probably won't slip but I still sit him back down cause I don't want to chance it lol
  • I can't help with how to get your lo to love baths, because thankfully Parker does. He'll only try to stand if he's really tired and ready to sleep, otherwise he'll sit and play.

as for getting soap out of his hair, I just keep wiping it out with the wash cloth, or I ring the wash cloth out over his head and quickly catch the water before it goes down his face.

  • We use the inflatable duck (from Munchkin) and DD stays on nicely. She is fine with water running down her face. I got her used to it by using some of her bath toys (they have little holes) as a "shower" to rinse her hair. Now I just use a regular cup and she is ok with it.

  • Bathtime with my daughter is like a wrestling match.  She moves around the tub like crazy and it is super slippery, so she's fallen a few more times than I'd like despite the fact that I am right there (almost always with a hand on her too).  We started bathing the kids together, but I can't handle them both on their own.  I just chase her around the tub and get it done as fast as possible.  Although she'd happily stay in there forever, since she loves the water.

As for rinsing hair, before DS was born I read somewhere that if you blow on their face it triggers a response where they take a deep breath and hold their breath.  I have done this with both of my kids and now they just hold their breath after I count to three (or say ready, set, go).

  • Like pp, I use a washcloth to catch the water before it drips down his face. But recently I've been trying to get him used to water in his face so I use those rubber ducky to squirt some water over his body then face and he thinks it hilarious.
Also, not much help with the tub situation. I still use the little tub and he doesn't have an issue with it. He does try to stand and climb out sometimes but I can usually distract him long enough to finish up bathtime.

We showered with DS for a while when he was little. Then he hated it. After that I'd get in the tub with him. Around 7 months DH wanted to try showering with DS again. He got used to it and started loving it. But he just got too squirmy and was climbing too much. Now he's in the tub by himself. We have a hand attachment thingy in our tub as well and I use that to do the washing and rinsing. Then I fill the tub with water and he plays for a bit with his toys. Now he has no problem with water on his face and now he even sticks his face in the stream to try and catch water in his mouth. He does stand and walk in the tub but he doesn't try to get out anymore. He has fun in the tub! When I shower when it's just the two of us he'll sit and play in the tub while I'm showering.

It wasn't as easy as it sounds. We definitely had to get him used to everything and we would slowly get him used to it. Now he bends down and sticks his face in the water!

Thx everyone. I tried the washcloth last night and it did not seem to help, but I am going to try the blowing in the face next time. I trialled that last night and I can see how she takes a deep breath in when I do it.

I did have my older dd in swim lessons, so maybe that made a difference w her. Who knows... Glad to see I am not alone!

my older dd went through this and it just took some time to get over.  She did really like these color drops that make the water different color and bubble bath helped.
