Maternity Photo Shoot- Worth It?

Hello there! This is my first post- I'm a FTM due September 17th. My husband and I are trying to decide if we will do a maternity photo shoot. A couple of my girlfriends have done them and they both say it was totally worth it. I'm not very photogenic so I'm hesitant, but we haven't been good about taking pictures up until now and I'd really like to have some. Any thoughts?

  • I wish I had done one, I guarantee a real photographer can take a picture that you'd love no matter how photogenic.

I would do it.  There are only a few times (if you have multiple pregnancies) that you will be able to capture these moments.  Memories fade over time, but having great photos to remember are definitely worth it in my book.

I'm due 9/30 and plan to have photos taken towards the end of July.

I have an acquaintance that takes AWESOME photos and will be doing our maternity photos for around $100.  I also plan to get her a gift card of some sort as well.  She is still in college, so not working professionally, but I've seen lots of her photos and LOVE them.  She will edit the photos and put them on disk and we can then print, send, etc. them as we please.

  • Thanks for the thoughts! My mom's boyfriend is an amazing amateur photographer but he sticks with wildlife and scenery so I think we'd go with someone I know from high school who takes amazing professional photos. Free or 100 would be amazing though!
  • It's worth it if you feel like it's something you really want and will keep around and have fond memories of. For myself, I'm not big on it so I know I'm not going to do this, but it's different for everyone.

  • I wish I did them with DS but I was on strict bed rest at 26 weeks since he tried coming early.. This time I am having a friend do them. I don't want anything to high end or fancy. Just the fact I am getting them done means everything to me.

  • I personally wouldn't spend money on one, but a girlfriend of mine is a wedding and baby photographer, so she's been taking pictures occasionally as I get bigger. I am SUPER not photogenic, but she's incredibly talented and finds ways to make look like a normal person on film :D
  • If you don't think you are very photogenic, then maybe get someone who is pretty artsy or an actual photographer to take the pics as they will be able to capture in good angles and lights to get some great photos that you will really like and be able to treasure forever! Definitely worth getting some great pregnant photos as like a few others have said its such a precious moment in your life and these pics will be great to show your child when they are born as well!!

I wasn't going to do them with DS but decided to at around 38 weeks (I was enormous).  I just went to JC Penny and paid about $20 for them.  We got some cute ones.  I think I'm going to do another cheap studio for maternity pics this time and do more expensive ones with an independent photographer when baby's born, though I feel bad because we didn't do professional ones with DS until he was a year old.

We did one with DS, we went to the park and my mum and DS took the photos, they turned out great, I hope I can do the same this time, although my mum won't be coming over before the birth so we will see, it might be FIL if he comes over, otherwise I may just do some single ones of me that DH takes.

  • My cousin will be taking some for me at 28 weeks. Nothing formal or fancy, and DH won't be there. But I want to get some done and I have two beautiful new maternity dresses from MIL that will be great for them. I've looked at pinterest to get ideas of what I want to do.

  • We did one last pregnancy, but seeing the pics we did it too early. This time we will be doing them between 3032 weeks, and it will double as a family portrait session.

  • I signed up a for a mini shoot that was part of a package deal with newborn photos. I don't want a ton of pictures of myself, just a few to remember this time. I think I get a half hour of shoot time and 7 edited photos, which is perfect for me and it was inexpensive. I didn't do maternity or newborn pictures with our first, and really regret it, so I wanted to go for it now since this is likely our last child. I super hate having my picture taken, but I'm going to suck it up because I want something to look back on and show my kids someday.

  • I am probably getting one done but I'll use a friend who is a professional photographer. It's the husband of a coworker so hopefully he'll do it for cheap lol
