We got the go ahead to start our DS on solids today. I always thought I would make my own baby food but now that the time is here it seems daunting and just easier to buy it. Thoughts? What has been your experience?
DH and I have been making our own baby food for a few weeks now. We make a batch and then freeze it in ice cube trays so they are in single servings. We thaw them the day we plan to use them. So far it's been pretty easy.
Try it! I have even doing it for about 3 weeks and it is so easy. You make a batch, freeze some, keep a few in the fridge and you're done! It's great and way way way cheaper!

check out this ladies blog! she has done 2 "batches" and it looks super easy! she even does steps. I haven;t done it yet, but it seems like it would be easy and cheap!
For purees I think it is definitely worth it. One pound of carrots which cost .79 cents made a little over 18 ounces once I added a little water to smooth out the puree. It is much cheaper than buying the little jars.
I did not do any prep work for the carrots, just washed them off. Broke them in half and steamed them. Used the water from steaming them for making them the right consistency. Used my ninja to puree them. Whole thing probably took 20 minutes or so.

This is what we do. The ice cube trays make the perfect size portions.
I haven't started LO on solids yet, but wanted to share a tip from my friend. She put her DH in charge of solids. She says "I have solely been feeding the baby from my boobs every day and night for 6 months-- the least he can do is cook an occasional sweet potato and put it into ice cube trays." It's super easy to do and as PPs have mentioned, you (he) can do a big batch at once. She sent him to the internet to figure out how to do it.
So, with that approach, I'd say it's worth it
If that's not an option, it is easier to buy, and no big problem IMO to buy.
We'll probably end up doing a mix-- make what we can, but if we have a busy couple of weeks, purchased food it will be.
I prefer making my own baby food, I just don't trust the ones I find on the market, who knows what they really contain? I'm just being careful with choosing the right solids for my LO, and this is my solids assistant: https://goodmomming.com You could give it a try!

Me too. It really does not take a lot of time from start to clean up. H is in the kitchen with me iin his exersaucer while I make batches. He loves watching.
and once they are frozen, I transfer them to gallon size ziplock bags and write the type of food and date made on it with a sharpie.
I was worried it would be a lot of work and I would constantly be making his food. That really isn't the case. I've been working to build up a good frozen base, and then I can just grab something and thaw it, and mix and match however I want. I just have to puree sweet potatoes once, and then I have enough of them to last for 3 months. Plus, it's so cheap. I spent less than $20 to make enough healthy, organic baby food to last for months.
I've been making DS baby food since he was 4mos. I buy from the farmers market about once a month, spend a few hours preparing (steam or boil, puree, and then freeze). I looked at BRU the other day and they wanted $10 for 8 jars of the organic food. Which would only feed DS for about 2 1/2 days. I think its worth it. It's cheaper and I know exactly what I am putting in LO food.
I use the Baby Breza food processor and I love it. I have only used it twice, but both times I have made enough food for 2 weeks and have froze it. I used the pouches, which I know some moms dont like, but its perfect for labeling when it was made and then throwing it in the freezer. Once LO is hungry I just thaw out one pouch and squeeze it into a bowl. I love it!
Re: Is it worth making your own baby food?
Hope this is ok, it is not my blog...

I've been making my own and it is absolutely worth it. We use a food processor and it is really easy. I have been using these two books for recipes:

I freeze in these ice cube trays:

Steam, mash with fork or puree in blender. I mix it with bm instead of water while pureeing and when thawing add some more bm in to make it smoother.
I haven't done much, just enough of a veggie to get a weeks worth of food. 2 sweet potatoes, 3 carrots, small batches for now.
Freeze in ice cube tray and pop into ziploc bag the next day with the date on it.
Easier than pie
I made 75 cubes of peas and carrots for $4.17. Definitely worth it.
