Success after IF

At 8 weeks.....

LO had her first bout of inconsolable crying last night. I am still traumatized.

We left her with MIL for a few hours yesterday and went to see a movie. When we got home my MiL had not given her the bottle I left, claiming she slept the whole time (this is always the story when MIL has her, yet she cradles her non stop, the entire time so its no wonder). Anywho I wound up feeding her after about 5 hours btwn feedings. She appeared the be starving so we kept going...it ended up being a long nursing session and my boobs had killed me during the movie so I probably should've been more cognizant.

About a half hour later, she spit up.... She's a frequent spitter so I thought nothing of it..... 15 minutes after that she started SCREAMING out of no where. She was clearly in pain.... All DH and I could come up with was stomach issues as she threw up again and her stomach was like a rock!!!!  We gave her gas drops and she then calmed down. The episode only lasted 20 min, but it was so out of the norm that it felt never ending and I was terrified there was a bigger issue.

since then she's eaten every few hours; although I have kept her nursing sessions shorter and am willing to do more of them today....and she pooped twice today already. Also of note; she only pooped twice all day yesterday both times right before the meltdown.

So curious as to what you guys think the issue could've been? dH thinks she over fed, which is certainly possible.... Or maybe gas? Or maybe even a little constipation?

this episode left me all sorts of riled up, I'd love to hear feedback or insight from those with more expertise than me!

Re: At 8 weeks.....

  • I'm not sure if this will be helpful, but my son went through the so-called 6 week fussy period from 6 weeks until almost 10 weeks.  Your baby might certainly have had a rough day with going too long between eating and then getting too much though.  I would actually hope for you that was the problem.  The fussy phase my baby went through was really hard.  Unless he was eating or sleeping he would be crying, often screaming!

ugh! That sounds awful.... Today (so far) has been much better! No fits, so hopefully it stays that way. Like I said though - I'm feeding her with shorter sessions and more frequently, so perhaps that's helping.

I know that was really hard for you. It's really rough when they are inconsolable. My guess would be that it was just a perfect storm of being off food and sleep schedule and maybe over eating or eating too fast which may have caused some gas trouble.
If she seems ok today, eating, sleeping, peeing and pooping, I wouldn't worry much about it. If this bout of inconsolable crying, as hard as I know it was, was the worst she's ever had, consider yourself lucky and know that you're doing a great job. E would scream for 4 to 6 hours every night for her first 6 weeks. There was nothing wrong with her, it was just her witching hours.
Gas drops and gripe water were both life savers for us. Take it easy on yourself and get lots of cuddles today.

youre the best TJ! I was hoping you'd weigh in because you always have such good insight....today has been much better, and full of snuggles. Quite honestly if I wasn't so tired last night I probably would have held her all night long..... It was really a heartbreaking incident..... Here's hoping it doesn't become a regular event!! Thanks for the encouraging words!
