Breast Pump

So I called my insurance today and it looks like they only cover manual breast pump. I am planning on being home for at least 6 months prior to returning to work. Do you think I should invest in an electric breast pump or just use the manual I can get for free? Its just they are so expensive. I hate my insurance, most my friends had electric pump covered :(

Re: Breast Pump

  • If you are pumping at work, I would definitely get an electric pump. You can wait to purchase it closer to when you return to work and just use the manual for the first few months.

Or do you have the option of upgrading your pump through your insurance and just pay the difference?

  • I would get an electric pump, but wait until you know BF will work out for you since you have so much time off.

You can also see what it costs to rent one through the hospital. I am planning to rent a symphony for my next baby and use the PISA as my travel/work pump.

  • Manual pumps are terrible for your hands.   I could barely pump out an ounce before they started cramping up.

You can get a single electric for $150  The Medela Swing is great.

It takes about 45 minutes to empty each breast with a manual. Even if you were going to be a full-time SAHM, I'd recommend a double-electric!

Look at the Ameda Purely Yours. Very highly rated, cheaper than a Medela double electric, and because it's a closed-system pump, it's safe to buy the motor used. You'd just have to purchase new parts (flanges, tubing, diaphragms, valves and bottles), which you can get online or at BRU.

I will second the Ameda Purely yours!  It is great.  I used it for 8 months and I never once had a problem with it.  It is a double electric and is about the same price as a single Medela.

If you plan on pumping so that you have a supply in the freezer when you go back to work you will without a doubt need an electric.  The manual is good if you will just want to give a bottle here or there so you can go out to dinner, but not for pumping enough to replace BF when you go back to work.

  • I'd go for a double electric without a doubt.  I've been using the Medela Freestyle for over 6 months now and have had no problems.
