What would you have done?

My kids have only taken one vacation a year ago and did not do well in the sleep dept. My inlaws invited us to spend the night at their lake house and I said we would but not sure how well the kids would sleep. They are not even good sleepers at home. So we tried from 911 to get them to sleep which they are normally in bed by 8:30. They would not go to sleep and were crying to go home, which is about an hour away. I was fed up and knew that they would be up all night so we decided to head home. They are asleep in the car and we should be able to be asleep around midnight. If we would have stayed they would have been up all night. Would you have left or kept trying? I am sick on top of this and did not have it in me to pull an all nighter. I kinda knew this would happen but I really tried everything.

Re: What would you have done?

  • I would have probably done the same thing.

The last time we took a vacation, we ended up driving around the city at 2 am and finally letting him cry in the PnP in the bathroom. We all got about 3 hours of sleep that night and we had a 3 hour drive planned the next day for our second leg of the trip.

My ILs have a lake house about an hour away and we haven't spent the night since he was tiny. They keep pestering us to come up there but they aren't the ones who have to spend hours getting the kid to sleep and then deal with the aftermath the next day. Since we live so close, we just offer to drive up there first thing in the morning and we usually make it in time for breakfast. Then we spend the day and leave that evening and A falls asleep on the ride home.

  • On vacation last summer I had to take a drive nearly every other night to get one or both of the kids to sleep. I would have drove around until they fell asleep and stayed. My kids would not have woken up when being moved from the car though. If that wasn't an option I would have left.

  • My DH and I have packed up a camping trip in the middle of the night and gone home because we were uncomfortable and exhausted - before kids.  So, I'm in the if you want to go home then do it category too.  Sleep is precious.

  • Glad to hear I'm not alone. We can take trips when they are a little older.

  • I've done quite a few weekend trips, and one longer trip. And sometimes the kids sleep great and sometimes it is an utter disaster. They seem to do better if we arrive a little early so they can get used to their destination, but that doesn't always work. We have always stayed and walked around until they fall asleep.
  • We're out of town this weekend and DD slept pretty badly last night. I was awake till almost 3am when DH took over and let me get some rest. When my MIL woke up at 7:30, she took a turn and DH and I were able to sleep in.

We didn't have the option to drive home since we flew. But we wouldn't have left anyway. Weekend trips are a part of life when your family lives in another state.

Some weekends are great, others not so much. But how is DD going to learn to get comfortable sleeping in other places unless we work with her on it? It's not necessarily going to get easier "when she's older."

I'm sure you all heard this all before, but i'm lucky our LO will sleep in pack  & play on vacations (still fits), we always bring her seahorse and her blanket so she is comfortable from something from home.

DD gets to sleep with us on vacation so it works out and is an incentive for her. She never was one to sleep in a pack n play... shes done well in the bed alone too if we lay with her first. Not sure if you want that but its what works for us. You do what you have to do. Maybe plan more overnight trips to the lake house when you have the energy to get them use to it.

This is for all the caterpillars that never became butterflies. And for all the butterflies that never felt the wind in their wings. And for all the hearts that had hopes and dreams of a wondrous flight together.
