My son is 7 months and I've been pumping regularly since going back to work at 3 months. I'm a little distraught over the amount I'm pumping. In the beginning, I was getting 3 to 4oz. Now when he's eating even more, I'm getting between 2 to 3oz. It takes me 3 or 4 pumping sessions to get ONE MEAL! In a few weeks I will start doubling my work hours and am concerned I won't be keeping up with the demand and have to switch to formula. I really enjoy my time breastfeeding and am thankful I am blessed with the ability when others can't. I don't want this to make me dry up. I use the Ameda Purely Yours and just bought the reducing inserts for the flanges after doing research on the sizing. I've used them 2x's and have only gotten 3.5oz. I've done all the troubleshooting, I start with the speed all the way up and go half way once a flow is established. I've tried massaging and starting again. I know I have enough milk because I've tried manually expressing afterward and still get more. But that's messy, takes too long and is awkward. I don't really have money for a new pump and don't want to take the chance of it happening with another brand. Has anyone else had this problem? What did you do?
Re: Breast Pump. HELP!!!
Purely yours is a great pump, however its weak flaw are the white valves. Go to BRU and buy a new set. I have gone through lots of them.
Any time there is a sudden drop of milk like that, that tells me it is time to change the valves. Also, sometimes the diaphragms will contract and get stuck in the squeezed position and wont inflate back up. That is a sure sign that the valves are bad. The diaphragms need to re-inflate up at every rotation.
Or you also know if the valves are bad if you hear a light hissing sound when pumping.
If you change the valves and you're still having a low supply, I suggest trying oatmeal, mothers milk tea, mother's milk plus... etc. If it all fails, then domperidone. Its a miracle drug.
Good luck!
