Referred to ENT

My son has had many ear infections. I was just at the pedi last week to check that the antibiotic cleared up the last one and his pedi said his ears were clear.

DS had a high fever last night and we went to the pedi this morning. DS has yet another ear infection. Right now one ear is infected and there is fluid in the other.

I feel awful because the pedi said my DS hears like he's underwater. This broke my heart. I just wish I could fix this.

We have been referred to an ENT. I'm nervous. I'm scared of DS most likely needing tubes and going under anesthesia. But I also want to help my DS hear better and have less ear infections.

Any advice or experiences to share? Thanks ladies.

  • Everyone I know who has had to go through this has been very happy with the result.  Good luck and hopefully he feels better soon!

  • I'm sorry to hear that!  I hope everything goes well for you.  Just echoing what the others have said that everyone I know as well has been very happy afterwards.

  • Thanks ladies. Our appointment isn't until after DS finishes the antibiotic so I have some time to research this a bit.

I'm glad others have been happy with the results.

  • my LO had a good amount of fluid in his ears when he was born... tubes were done at 5 months because of severe hearing loss... and it was the BEST decision we ever made.

the day of the surgery i was a nervous wreck. but, it was a total of ten minutes and the next day he was back to his old self... and he could hear! :)

    good luck!! :)

  • B had tubes put in when he was 4.5 months old. It was the best thing we have ever done. Yes, I was nervous for the surgery, but it literally took 18 minutes from the time he left my arms to the time the doc came back in to tell us he was in recovery waking up. He hasn't had any ear infections since then. Good luck!!!
  • Thank you ladies for sharing your personal experiences. It makes me feel better to hear positive experiences with tubes.

Did the ENT go straight suggesting tubes for your LOs? Or was there other options? I'm just curious. I feel so clueless about this whole thing.

  • We saw the ENT twice before we decided on tubes. B had 6 ear infections in 4 months, so there was really no other options once the antibiotics stopped working. I know your nervous and that's totally normal, but it really is the easiest, fastest procedure and he will feel so much better.

Thanks Emily. I think getting tubes is better than constant ear infections and antibiotics. I'm glad it worked out well for B. The more I've been thinking about it the more I think it's the best thing for my DS.

  • We went for tubes at like 9 months. Everyone told me it was a walk in the park and it wasnt exactly. It was rough. He screamed like he was in pain for a half an hour after and it was a pretty miserable night BUT totally worth it. We havent had 1 since.

this is exactly how my LO responded too... it was definitely rough after the procedure with coming off the anesthesia... and also i think he was super sensitive to all the new noises around him. but the next day he was back to his old self... :)

we met with the ENT when LO was two months and then again at 4 months... after coming to the conclusion that the fluid wasn't draining, we decided to go for the tubes because of the severity of hearing loss.

one last thing... my LO had his very first ear infection about a month ago... he had a ton of fluid draining from his ear which i thought was normal because of the tubes.  i had no clue his ears were infected...he was happy and showed no sign of pain. tubes drained the fluid and relieved the pressure in the ear!

  • No advice just wanted to say that my cousin's daughter had tubes put in her ears as a baby too. She's 12 now and her hearing is perfect.
