Baby Names

had a name...may change it

I am due in less than a month and we thought we were set on a name for DD#2, we even put the name on the wall.

but it is so close to DD#1s name that I have been second guessing it for awhile now. Even DD#1 has been calling her little sister by her name. I don't know what to do! I love the original name more than the new name, but it still is bugging me that it is so close to DD#1s name.

**purposely leaving out the actual names because I don't want that to be influenced by what you would do, should I just keep the name even though it is very close to DD#1s name or change it to the new name?**

Ok I will give you the names, DD#1 is Shayla. The name we have been thinking of for a few months now for DD#2 is Layna, the new name is Bay. My DH LOVES Bay.

  • If you love it, use it.

  • We can't really help you tell if they are too close without you sharing the names.... I guess, if you love it, use it?
    Waiting for #3!

I agree. It's hard to answer without knowing the names.

  • Confused. You are looking for advice on whether you should keep the name, but won't say what it is because you don't want to be influenced by what we would do?

  • I agree that if you love it, use it.  DS is Mason and we almost named DD Maren.  I decided they were too close for my liking, but part of me also thinks it would have been kinda cute.  Also, while they are both you're children, they are more often individuals- meaning, they will more often not be with their sibling so it's not like it's always going to be "Hi my name is ____ and this is my sister _____" or "These are my two daughters ______ and ______"

I think it's a bit silly when sibling names are TOO matchy. I know of sisters named Ella and Emma, chosen just because they loved them both. But...it just looks like they're not very creative, you know?

That being said, they'll only be a 'set' for a brief amount of time in their lives. If you love the name more than any other name in the whole world, go for it. It's not THAT big a deal.

I agree with this. I also agree you might get better feedback if you tell us the names. You may just be over thinking it. I mean, if it's Emma and Emily, I'd say that's too close. If it's Lily and Lucy, meh, I think that's fine if you really love both names.

  • Yeah, just share the names. It will make this post MUCH easier

If it bugs you then don't use it. I you really like it even though it's close to your daughters name then use it.

I don't know what else to say.

If you love it I would still use it.

  • I also feel like this post is pointless without knowing the names. There is no way to judge how close they are if we don't know the names in question.

Also, I feel like your daughters won't be a set together forever but they will be to YOU. When they visit you together in the nursing home you will introduce them to your friends as a set, so I would keep that in mind.

  • Shayla and Layna don't sound the same at all to me. Basically, they just end in the same 'uh' sound. I would use it or go with Bay. Bay isn't my style, but it's fine with Shayla, too.

  • I think Shayla and Layna are too close, IMO. The names together are a bit of a tongue twister for me and when pronouncing them together makes me change Shayla's name to Shayna.

I don't have a real opinion on Bay since I'm unfamiliar with the name, but I think it works better than Layna.
    Have you considered Lyla?

My son & daughter's name end the same as well (Benton & Leighton). It wasn't on purpose, we just really liked their names & they fit them when born. Now that we are expecting #3 lots of people ask if it will be another "ton" name and that really isn't a factor for us. I say if you love the name, go with it!

  • HATE Bay. I do think Shayla and Layna are too matchy. What about just Laine?

  • Shayla and Layna are fine. Or name her Lana and pronounce it LAW nuh
  • I would keep the old one. They're not that smilar IMO. Plus the only Bay I now is DH"s great uncle so it seems like an old man name to me.

Those are all way too close, including Bay (which I really dislike). I would really try to find something else. Sorry.

eta: I like the suggestions of Lana or Laine. Those would work.
