How many strollers?

I don't know a ton of people with kids, but the ones that do have kids tell us that we should get a jogging stroller travel system type deal which to me - would cover all the bases.  But then I started looking around, do we get one with four wheels too? What are the advantages? Would I really need two strollers with just one child?

We had 3 strollers, now 4.  New one is a double.

Started with the UppaBaby Vista, which had a carseat attachment and is totally awesome.  Then we were flying to Hawaii, so we needed a lightweight umbrella.  Bought the UppaBaby G-luxe.  Then I decided a was going to do a 5k, an my UppaBaby Vista, which was fine for StrollerStrides wasn't cutting it, so I bought a used BOB revolution on craigslist.  That is what I use exclusively for SS and any walks on uneven or rough terrain.

It really just depends on how you are going to use your stroller.  Start with one that you believe will meet most of your needs, but be prepared to buy a second, or third later on.

I think that having only 1 stroller is hard.  For 1 child, I like something for jogging or walking that is all terrain and something lightweight for the car.  Most strollers that seems to "do it all" don't do any one thing particularly well.  That said, a lot depends on your lifestyle.

  • I started with a snap n go for the first 6 months. This is a good option if you are not sure what type of stroller to get. After 6 months, you'll know your needs and what kind of stroller to get.

I also highly recommend the britax b safe and b agile stroller system. The b agile stroller is really light, easy to fold and push. It is not a jogger, but handles pretty well on uneven sidewalks, grass, dirt, etc.
  • I have a snap and go and a jogging/all terrain (Baby Jogger Summit). I will probably buy an umbrella stroller once DD outgrows her car seat and I can't use the snap and go for running in a store anymore.

We very quickly went from a single to a double.

I have three, and two via guardianship.

DD3 was just under six months when we added a newborn and a two year old to the mix.

I had a city select for her, and added the second seat to it.

I have a valco trimode ex twin with the third seat for Logan.

I also have a baby jogger mini double.

I didn't do the travel system for Eryn.  I did have the car seat attachment for the city select, but rarely used it.  She rides in a britax Chaperone at nine months.

I also had a uppa baby vista.

I forgot to add a Bob Duallie.

  • I plan on only having one, at least to start. I'm getting the City Mini GT and the car seat adapter so I can use it as a travel system.

    I don't see a need for a jogging stroller unless you are a runner/jogger....

I figure down the road I might get a light umbrella stroller, but I'll wait to see what I think I need.

  • If you are a runner, joggers are great, but they tend to be awkwardly large in crowds and stores. Unfortunately there isn't any stroller that is awesome for everything. We have an uppa vista which is great but heavy. I bought a gluxe for travel because it is a heck of a lot lighter for airplanes. I plan on buying a jogger/bike trailer this summer and we also have a red wagon.

  • We have one - the City Mini. We don't go for walks on unpaved surfaces, and we don't run. We used a convertible car seat from birth so needed a stroller that laid flat for a newborn. It has been great to have whether at the park, the mall, or the airport. My husband wants an umbrella stroller for places where the City Mini would be too awkward to store when not in use (a baseball game? I'm not sure) but we've managed without it so far.
  • We have 2. I have Keekaroo Karoo as my lightweight umbrella stroller for zoo trips and the mall and a Bumbleride Indie for walks around the neighborhood and the beach. It's techinically a jogging stroller but I don't jog, so I've never used it for that.

  • at one time we had 5 strollers - we have two children that are only 15 months apart and this was last summer when they were not yet 2 and not yet one.

a single travel system, a single umbrella, a double umbrella, a single jogger, a double jogger.

and i wanted a double travel system as well. all of them worked better for different purposes and i bought them all used except for the single travel system and the double jogger, which were gifts and were not top of the line (safety first and baby trend). but they work well for us.

we now just have the single umbrella, the single travel and the double jogger.

and i kind of wish i wouldnt have sold the others!

  • We had 1 when I just had DD.  It was a simple travel system type stroller.  When she outgrew the carseat, we still used the stroller.  It was not bulky or difficult to maneuver, like many bumpies complain about.

I think what stroller and how many will totally depend on your situation as well as your finances.  We live in suburb.  We drive everywhere, so no long walks...no difficult terrain, etc.  I also do not run or jog outside, so a jogging stroller is pointless.

Now that we have two we have 1 double stroller, a joovy sit n stand.

It seems like the ladies on the bump are totally stroller obsessed ...so keep that in mind!

I have to be honest and say I do not understand why people buy joggers...unless they jog or go for long country walks on dirt roads. When I had one kid I had two strollers. I started with a travel system and added an umbrella when he got older. Ok, I lied...I also bought a jogger right before I got pregnant with 2 which I sold once it became obvious I wasn't going to be running for another year.

With two it got a little uglier because I still have the two single strollers, plus a double and a double umbrella and a double jogger for jogging. And yes I am ashamed to admit I use four of the five on a regular basis. The only exception is the double umbrella because LO is still too young for it.

Edit: the jogging stroller comment seemed snarky when I reread it and it wasn't intended to be. I just meant because joggers are so big.

  • we had the joggers for exactly the reason you mentioned... we lived in the country and our roads are not nice pavement. i didnt buy my jogger until after my son was born and he literally bounced the entire time he was in the travel system. bought the jogger, and smooth sailing from there. i dont jog, but our double jogger is my favorite stroller because of the smooth ride. buying real rubber tires instead of plastic makes a difference!

  • This is our first child and we just got a Bugaboo Cameleon3 (gift from my sister), we also have an I'Coo Pluto umbrella type stroller and awhile ago we got a Baby Trend Sit and Stand stroller as it was on clearance. We may have overdone it (lol) but we like having options.

  • I am a FTM and only planning on having 1 stroller. They are so expensive I can't imagine buying more then 1.

We are getting Graco 3 in 1 modes travel system and the stroller can grow with the child. I don't plan on jogging with the stroller and live in suburban area so most of the time I spend in the car. The only time we'll use the stroller is when I take the LO to the nearby park or go for a walk with a friend. All the roads are paved etc so where I live you really don't need more then 1 stroller

  • Here's what I had/have vs what I'm doing the second time around...

Graco Snap n Go. I used this as my "on the go" stroller frame. You snap the car seat into it and go. It was fine, but I wasnt crazy about it. I don't do travel systems so this seemed like the next best thing.

Maclaren Volo - Is SUPER lightweight. However, it's not comfortable or padded at all. I quickly put this away for airport travel and bought...

BJ City Mini. To say I love this stroller is an understatement.

We also have the BJ City Summit XC. Everyone said to get the Bob, we HAD to get a BOB, we'd ruin our baby's life if he wasn't toted around in a BOB, anyone who is anyone cool gets a BOB, on and on.  After trying out a BOB, I knew that was not the stroller for us (it wasn't as padded as the BJ, it also was a PITA to fold down and it is HUGE). I needed a stroller I could easily break down and stow with a baby in my arm and holding the leash of 2 dogs whose combined weight is more than me.

We use the BJ City Summit daily, between walking the dog, going for long walks at the state parks, we used it on the beach before DS could walk with us, etc.

But everyone I know LOVES their Bob. I just respectfully disagree with how great that stroller is.

So next time around...I'm selling my Snap n Go and getting a car seat adapter with my City Mini. Then if I need to, I'll replace my single BJ City Summit with a double one.

If money were no object, I'd splurge on the Uppa Vista Baby or a Bugaboo, especially for those first 6-9 months of walking so I could see DS the whole time, but I just couldn't swing either of those.

  • We own 2, a jogging stroller and Britax B-agile. For me, I can't imagine only having one. That would suck lol

I tried just getting by with my jogging stroller at first, but it was far too large for taking shopping. I couldn't fit down the aisles! If you aren't going to jog or take walks on rough terrain I would skip the jogging stroller, otherwise you will likely need 2 strollers.
