Ear Tubes and swimming

DD is getting tubes next week. When we first went to the ENT we asked about her swimming this summer and he said we'll just need to put ear plugs in her ears when she goes swimming. I'm just wondering if anyone knows of another possible option other than plugs that I could ask the dr about? Like maybe swimmer's ear or something? Of course I'll put the plugs in her ears if that's what I have to do I just know it's going to be a fight to do that lol and just want to see if there's anything else out there...Thx

  • We were just there yesterday about this same issue.  We do not need to use plugs but do need to use drops anytime his ears get wet.

  • Our ENT said we didn't need to worry about plugs, ear bands, anything when they are in the water. Both of my girls have/had tubes and we've never had an issue with water getting in their ears. I *think* her reasoning was they'd have to be going pretty deep under water for the pressure to be enough to force water through the tube, so unless you've got a diving prodigy on your hands she thought the risk was minimal enough not to worry.

Our ENT said this also.   No drops either.

Our ENT said not to worry in a chlorinated pool, but for baths and lakes to use ear plugs. One of my friends kids has tubes too and their ENT said ear plugs for all water activities. He's seen too many kids get water and need follow up surgery so why chance it.

We got ear buddy ear plugs and ear bandit head band to keep plugs in. We use the plugs for bath and pool. We just went swimming yesterday and he won't keep the band on, but doesn't seem to mind the plugs.
