I love this show, but I get super annoyed when these kids come on and say ZOMG we were so poor and couldn't afford the house but my mom did what she had to to keep me in dance lessons.
WTF??? If money was that tight, I don't care if my child was Olympic material, sorry, lessons would go.
If I can't afford housing and food.....ummm no lessons for you! I am sure these kids are embellishing to get on TV, but it just makes me not like them. But I do believe there are a lot of people who continue any type of lessons when they cannot afford it. Sure, it worked out for Gabby Douglas, but she is definitely the exception.
Re: Anyone watch SYTYCD?
I love the show, but I can't stand the sob stories. I think most of them are greatly exaggerated so the dancer can get more air time.
My niece is a semi-professional dancer (she doesn't make much money at it) and a ballet teacher. She's actually worked with a lot of the choreographers they have on the show. Anyway, her family never has had much money and I often wondered how they paid for her to dance. Then my SIL and I were talking one day and I discovered that almost all of her dance instruction has been through scholarship. Her dance instructors saw such promise in her as a young dancer, that they basically donated the majority of her training. I know that's just her experience, but I would bet that scholarships often happen for talented dancers without much money.
I love this show! My brother and I both danced and it is SO expensive! To pay for the costumes, competitions, and lessons, we fundraised like crazy! We worked sporting events (pro football/baseball/basketball, ect.). Even when we stopped dancing, we kept working sporting events and my parents got reimbursed because they kept all of their receipts.
I would love more auditions and less sob stories. And Mary Murphy cannot pull off a perm;
